Todays healthcare system is complex and with diverse needs more than ever before. Nursing in today’s healthcare system is challenging because of divers patient populations, rapid technological advancement and changes in healthcare policies. Nursing play an integral part of the health care system because of nurses are the front line workers in patient care. In 2010, Affordable Care Act was launched with the intention of providing health care for the population of the United States regardless of financial status. • Nurses should achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved education system that promotes seamless academic progression.
• Nurses should be full partners, with physicians and other health care professionals, in redesigning health care in the United States.
• Effective workforce planning and policy making require better data collection and an improved information infrastructure (Institute of Medicine[IOM], 2010, p. 1).
Advanced practice registered nurses(APRNs) , such as nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, nurse anesthetists, and nurse midwives faces the rules and regulations of the state and federal government, which hinder them from practice to the full extent of their education and training. For an example: in some states nurse practitioners are allowed to see patients and prescribe medications without a physician’s supervision, whether other states does not allow that. “The report offers recommendations for a variety of stakeholders from state legislators to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to the Congress to ensure that nurses can practice to the full extent of their education and training”( IOM, 2010, p. 2). As patient needs became more complex, nurses need to achieve necessary competencies to deliver high-quality care. According to IOM (2010), nurses should have competencies in following areas: leadership, health policy, system improvement via information technology, research and evidence-based practice, teamwork and collaboration, as well as competency in specific areas including community and public health and aging population. The IOM committee suggested that the nurses should be educated in new ways, which can better prepare them to meet the needs of the population in 21st century.
