Healthcare organizations are required to be in compliance with the Federal requirements in order to ensure the equipment and patient safety. There are many programs that are responsible of providing health and safety guidelines in healthcare industry. Manufacturer recommendations are not enough to ensure patient and equipment safety in the healthcare industry. There are many healthcare programs now that are needed to be administrated by an agency to ensure that they get the expected outcome in the medical field. CMS is the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, and it is an agency that is part of the US Department of Health & Human Services. CMS purpose is to administrate several health care programs such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). CMS play a big role in the healthcare industry for administration the health programs. CMS provides administration that helps in giving more effective healthcare system that leads to high quality care and more good outcomes with lower costs. Also, CMS cooperate with States in order to set up the marketplaces’ insurance and regulate plans for private healthcare. CMS have the power to issue memos and mandates based on incomplete information because it is an agency that is responsible for many different healthcare programs for safety guidelines. According to Keith Jesse, departments were allowed to create their own roles and decisions on PM for equipment by The Joint Commission. There was a conflict with CMS, which recommends using the manufacturer’s guidelines and procedures in doing PM. Also, CMS is an agency that focus in the patient and equipment safety over the costs of frequent maintenance. Many may disagree with the CMS directive for some medical devices because it consumes time and resources for unnecessary maintenance, but CMS recommends that at least there should be a frequent maintenance for each medical equipment. CMS has skills in administrating the healthcare programs effectively, and it continues its efforts to improve the safety of patient and medical equipment in the healthcare industry.
