In almost 100 years, Miami City Hospital, led by civic leader and physician Dr. James M. Jackson, has developed from a small, 13-bed hospital to a comprehensive health systems with multiple clinics and hospitals, now named Jackson Health System (JHS). JHS has become a famous healthcare provider known for its cutting-edge care and highly-trained physicians. Even though several things have not remained the same, one thing still does: Jackson does not stop being a vital part of South Florida community, giving state-of-the-state-art very compassionate care to any person that walks through its door. On June 25, 1918 Miami Hospital opened its door, taking the place of the deteriorating Society Hospital on Biscayne Boulevard. The hospital opened in the midst of an influenza epidemic and was quickly filled to capacity. In 1919, the first X-rays at the hospital were taken by Dr. A.F. Kaspar on patient with a broken leg. Approximately three years later, an emergency room was set up “to take care of the many accidents arising from congested traffic and industrial activities,” according to a newspaper article at the time. This equipment is use in the endoscopy department for gastroenterological and surgical procedures. From the patient hospital chart the case manager must review what diet the patient is on, review what lines/drains they have and anticipated removal date, and if the patient is ambulating to decide when the patient is ready to go home.
