Access to healthcare is the process whereby medical services is made readily available to people within a geographical location “having the timely use of personal health services to achieve the best health outcomes" (IOM, 1993). Attaining good access to care requires three discrete steps: gaining entry into the health care system and getting access to sites of care where patients can receive needed services (bphc 2014).
Access to health care varies vastly across the globe. Hence, issues surrounding access to health care vary as well. For example, reports from the World Health Organization indicate that often, families have to pay out of pocket for health care and suffer the consequences of impoverishment owing to the absence of universal health coverage. A WHO and World Bank Group report shows that 400 million people do not have access to essential health services and 6% of people in low to middle-income countries are tipped into or pushed further into extreme poverty because of health spending (2014). This is because healthcare is not readily available in these places and is difficult to provide because of the lack of resources and labor, therefore; ceteris paribus, a shortage in supply will inevitably lead to an increase in price. Although, increased attempts should be made to guarantee the well-being of such individuals and families it is understandable that health care in low to middle-income countries is a luxury that only the wealthiest of people can afford. Access to healthcare in Boston however, is very different from low to middle-income countries because Boston is a very sophisticated city with the latest technology in healthcare and is filled with the most brilliant minds when it comes to the health profession. Several organizations exist which will be interested in lending a helping hand towards our intervention, for example, the Boston public health commission which is vastly experienced in this field and has formed a task force to curb things like racial disparities in health. Like the institute for health improvement (IHI). Which needless to say is focused on improving health outcomes by working collaboratively with individuals and organisations, to improve health at regional, local and state levels. It is because of their expertise in handling and improving health systems that they would be intrested in offering support to our intervention
