Health Promotion Health promotion is the process of improving health status of a person and prevention of disease by enabling the person to take control of their health. It is not just the absence of disease (Maben, & Clark, 1995). Health promotion is commonly used term in health care world, and in current society the promotion of health has greater significance, especially with the rise in consumerism. Health promotion consists of all actions that encourage maximum spiritual, mental and physical functions despite of whether an individual is ill or well. Most of these plans are aimed at bringing positive lifestyle changes (Van Leuven, & Prion, 2007). A major core competency for all NPs is health promotion. Through regular screening, immunizations and counselling, NPs can guide their patients towards the goal of health promotion and disease prevention. As a future NP, my goal is to provide patient-centered, holistic care focusing on health promotion and sickness prevention. I also believe that an understanding of practice models like Pender’s Health Promotion Model will enable me to empower patients to obtain self-efficacy and behavior specific changes. An example of health promotion measures used in my practice area is smoking cessation program. All patients admitted in our hospital are screened for smoking habits upon admission and are offered help. Henderson stresses the significance of health promotion and disease prevention, which will be my main focus while functioning as a nurse practitioner. She also described the role of a nurse as one of the following: substitutive, where nurse does almost everything for the patient; supplementary, where nurse is assisting patient in meeting the needs; or complementary, where nurse and patient work together to meet the needs. Often in practice, we as nurses deal with a variety of diseases and treatments and often have to react to the illness that the patient presents with upon our interaction. While this is an essential piece of our practice, we also have a duty to our patients to be proactive in preventing specific health-related consequences based on their risk factors and to promote their health and well being. Health promotion as it relates to nursing is about us empowering our patients to increase their control over their lives and well beings and includes: focusing on their health not just illness, empowering our patients, recognizing that health involves many dimensions and is also effected by factors outside of their control (Whitehead et al. 2008)..

Applying the theory of Health Promotion Model to the issue of staff level provides resolution and interventions that can assist leader in the organizations in improving the delivery of care, assist nurses and acknowledge them as a valuable resource, and in promoting patient’s health outcomes. Throughout this philosophy paper, I have explored what nursing is based on my personal values and beliefs as it relates to the body of work in nursing. I value the importance of holistic nursing and the care of patients being individualized for them and their family. Also, effectively collaborating among health care professionals to ensure quality care for patients. Additionally, the importance of health promotion as one of the main roles of nurses is being a teacher, since promoting health prevents illness and increases the level of health in clients. These principles will serve as a guide for my personal standards of nursing practice.

To start off, I am going to explain the Health Promotion definition. Health is one’s ability to function well physically, mentally, and socially in order to function within the environment in which they are living in (World Health Organization, 2016). Encouraging one’s control over their own health in relation to social and environmental interventions defines health promotion which leads to the optimization of health (World Health Organization, 2016). It is essential for older adults to partake in changing their lifestyle in terms of their behavior and applying the knowledge they receive from health care providers in order to promote health (World Health Organization, 2016). Older adults mostly have a hard time taking care of themselves and need the assistance to guide them for their well-being. Therefore, nurses have a vital role in providing information and teaching individuals how to gain healthy ideas to promote healthy behaviors. Health promotion includes providing activities that improve a person’s health. These activities assist patients to “maintain or enhance their present levels of health. Health promotion activities motivate people to act positively to reach more stable levels of health” (Potter & Perry, 2005, p. 97). In order for nurses to assist patients in obtaining healthy lifestyles, they must first assess a patient’s perception of health. The World Health Organization defines health as a “state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” (as cited in Potter & Perry, 2005, p. 91). There are many nursing theories that are based on an individual’s perception of health. This paper will explore how health promotion theories can assist nurses in understanding how these perceptions can affect a person’s lifestyle choices.
Public Health Nursing (PHN) aims to improve the wellbeing of the population by promoting health and preventing disease among all people in the communities (Public Health Nursing, 2013). The PHN utilizes the primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention to help improve the health of the communities. The PHN process is applied to all levels of practice. Interventions are “actions take on behalf of individuals, families, systems, and communities to improve or protect health status” (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2012, p. 191). This paper will identify PHN interventions such as screening, outreach, and referral and follow-up, health teaching, and counseling that was identified in the PHN in the 21st Century project that this author completed as part of the PHN experience. This paper will also identify if the interventions were at the community, system or individual/family level.
