Recently President Obama has enacted new Health Care Reforms requiring everyone to have some form of insurance. Many citizens have a problem with being forced to buy insurance that is to expensive; or finding insurance policies that are affordable monthly, but the copays are too expensive to ever be able to use their policies. There is also the issue of some people do not believe in western medicine and have other practices of healing. I feel that it is unfair to make people finically or morally burdened by forcing them to buy health insurance. I know many people who would rather pay a fine than be forced into something they do not want or cannot afford. THIS LEADS TO THE ARGUMENT IS IT FAIR TO FORCE PEOPLE TO HAVE HEALTH INSURANCE.
Obama care is designed to give more Americans access to affordable, quality health insurance, and to reduce the growth in health care spending in the U.S. according to (obamacarefacts.com). Is forcing citizens to sign up for health insurance really going to help them get quality health insurance or reduce health car spending? I feel that we need to fix our systems and how doctors treat people; and maybe than more people would be inclined to have health insurance and use it. For example I have insurance through my husband’s work, but the copays are so high we cannot afford to use it regularly. When we do go we are not treated like our time and money matter, for instance I went for severe abdominal pain, and was told I am over weight go home and lose weight and I should be fine. Why would anyone want to pay monthly for insurance rates and high copays to be treated that way? If people were not rushed and treated with respect and dignity, more people would not have a problem paying for services.

As Austin Frakt of Boston University puts it, the data "suggest that Americans recently poured a lot more of the national economy into health care without moving the needle on the rate of growth in real, human resources (jobs) devoted to delivering care.” (LA times) So if imposing health insurance on American citizens was supposed to help with lowering cost and create an opening for more jobs why is this not the case? Access to healthcare provides financial stability by assuring people that they will not be financially destroyed by injury or illness. The Affordable Care Act or “Obamacare” was designed to assure that all Americans regardless of health status have access to affordable health insurance. The Affordable Car Act was signed into law March 23, 2010. The primary goal of this act was to decrease barriers for obtaining health care coverage and allow Americans to access needed health care services (Affordable Care Act Summary, n.d). After the legislation is fully implemented in 2014, all Americans will be required to have health insurance through their employer, a public program such as Medicaid and/or Medicare or by purchasing insurance through the health insurance marketplace exchange (Affordable Care Act Summary, n.d). I will identify three parts of The Affordable Care Act that I believe are important. First, I will talk about the requirement that insurance companies are no longer able to deny coverage to individuals with pre-existing conditions. Secondly, I will explain why physician payments are being shifted to value over volume. Lastly, I will discuss Medicaid expansion and why some states are not expanding at all.
Rachel was 40 years old when she moved from India to USA with her husband and four kids to fulfill their American dreams. She knew little english and had great difficulty fitting into the new environment in America. She was unable to work because she had to take care of her 10- month-old daughter. Her husband, who was a lawyer in India, was now working at Forman Mills for minimum wage. Recently, Rachel was diagnosed with stage II breast cancer. Her doctors said her tumor is almost seven years old and if she has routine check ups, her survival rate will be higher. Rachel did not have a health insurance and because of this, she postponed necessary care and avoided preventive care. Even though she gets basic treatments from Public Healthcare Center it is not enough for this chronic disease. Her family is helpless; if her husband took insurance coverage from workplace there would be little money left for their daily expenses after paying for insurance premiums. Her husband is now planning to take another job so he can take workplace insurance and save his wife.
The United States spends vast amounts on its healthcare, while falling short of achieving superiority over other developed nations. One cannot overlook that the deepening recession has left many without jobs and therefore lacking health insurance. According to Fairhall and Steadman, (2009), even though the recession is hard on all, it is worse on the uninsured due to health care and insurance cost rising faster than incomes. Nevertheless, even those with jobs are lacking in health insurance due to employers, who provide insurance, are increasingly dropping their sponsored insurance. Many find that purchasing a health policy or paying for medical care out-of-pocket is cost prohibitive. “Since the recession began in December 2007, the number of unemployed Americans has increased by 3.6 million,” (Fairhall & Steadman, 2009). In 2009 it was stated that approximately 46 million Americans were uninsured, however not all of that number is due to the inability to afford coverage. However, our system is based on money. The more money you have to spend, the better medical services you will receive. ?According to the Bureau of Labor education at the university of main (2003), America spends more money oh health care than any other nation, "$4,178 per capita on health care in 1998?, compared to the average of $1,783. (BLE., 2003, p.23). Still an estimated "42.5 million Americans are living without health insurance", which prevents them from receiving medical treatment. (Climan, Scharff, 2003, p.33). The numbers of un-insured Americans continue to rise. Tim Middleton (2002) states, ?insurance premiums grow at a rate greater than wages,? when you have a low-income job. (¶ 9). With our current economy recession, taxes are rising and small business employers are unable to purchase health plans for their employees. Employees are realizing that they are unable to gain insurance from their jobs and beginning to speak out about the high price of health care.
In recent years, the number of Americans who are uninsured has reached over 45 million citizens, with millions more who only have the very basic of insurance, effectively under insured. With the growing budget cuts to medicaid and the decreasing amount of employers cutting back on their health insurance options, more and more americans are put into positions with poor health care or no access to it at all. At the heart of the issue stems two roots, one concerning the morality of universal health care and the other concerning the economic effects. Many believe that health care reform at a national level is impossible or impractical, and so for too long now our citizens have stood by as our flawed health-care system has transformed into an unfixable mess. The good that universal healthcare would bring to our nation far outweighs the bad, however, so, sooner rather than later, it is important for us to strive towards a society where all people have access to healthcare.
Health Insurance is one of the nations top problems, the cost is rising for premiums, and many businesses just cannot afford it. As Americans many of us have the luxury of health insurance, but far too many of us have to go without it. This is something that always seems to brought up at congressional debates, but little is done about it. “In 2013 there were 41 million people reported with out health insurance coverage, this is too many considering those people probably were sick at some point through out the year, and they couldn’t afford treatment.” We need to find someway to make sure that every citizen of the United States is able to have affordable healthcare for themselves, and their families.
I say this because a person shouldn’t have to pay ridiculous rates for quality care and I like to know that when I have to get insurance, I’ll have more protection against discrimination since I’m female. And, it’s unfair that certain groups of people pay higher rates because they’re considered to carry a higher risk for something that may never be a factor. If they prove themselves to be high risk by behavior, their lifestyle, or their condition worsens, then, prices should increase. Our healthcare system has developed into a burden for most people and has terrible consequences for others. It consists of everyone paying for healthcare as a whole, instead of people paying for themselves. This system of healthcare has burdened the people who take care of themselves and have money, but extends the life of people who do not take care of themselves and live in poverty. We are the wealthiest country yet we don’t have free universal health coverage. The insurance companies are attempting to manage cost through price controls and we’re still having to pay out of pocket for a lot of the expenses.
