Perhaps, the most widely accepted benefit of a total vegetarian diet is it promotes cardiovascular health. Cardiovascular disease is a heart disease caused by small raised areas on the inside of arteries (Physicians committee). Poor cardiovascular health leads to strokes and heart attacks. The main factors of heart disease are high cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking, and family history. High cholesterol leads to a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease because when there is too much cholesterol in the blood, it builds up on the inside of arteries. “In 2006, cardiovascular disease became one of the primary cause of death among men and women in the United States.” (Center for Disease Control and Prevention 2007) High-fat foods such as dairy and meat contribute to the development of cardiovascular disease. In fact, red and processed meat products are the main source of cholesterol in non vegetarian eating habits. The traditional American diet, which is high in saturated fats and processed foods, is hurting people’s health. A carefully planned vegetarian diet with an adequate amount of nutrients can prevent cardiovascular disease (Sticher et al.). Typically, total vegetarians have a lower chance of developing cardiovascular disease because they tend to have lower cholesterol levels due to their diets which do not include fatty animal derived foods. People on a traditional American diet tend to eat large amounts of processed food because processed foods are not filling. Lots of these processed foods are high in fat and calories and low in nutrients. This leads to people overeating because they are hungry. A total vegetarian diet provides a balanced approach to weight management.
In conclusion, a total vegetarian diet is the healthiest diet because it is associated with several health benefits. People choosing a plant-based diet can see many improvements in their health and life.
