Hayao Miyazaki
Hayao Miyazaki has been revolutionary in Japanese animation. A mangaka (an artist/writer/creator of manga, Japanese comics), an animator, and storyteller, Miyazaki has not only been very successful in his work, well known and loved by many, but has changed the world of anime with his unique style of drawing. Through passion and hard work, Miyazaki has become one of the most successful animators in all of Japan.
Miyazaki was born on January 5th, 1941, in Tokyo, Japan (MUBI.com). His father, Katsuji Miyazaki, was the director and owner of their family’s firm, Miyazaki Airplane, that made parts for Zero fighter planes. His father’s job contributed to his fascination with flying, and accurately depicting it in his animation (U.X.L Graphic Novelists vol. 2: 344-345). His mother, Dola Miyazaki had spinal tuberculosis, and was bedridden for eight years, passing away at the age of 71 in 1980 (Telecom). She was very influential to him, parts of her personality (strong and irrepressible) in characters in My Neighbor Totoro and Castle In The Sky, among others. As a child, Miyazaki was always fascinated with drawing, mostly airplanes- drawing people didn’t come as easily (Telecom). At three years old he and his family were evacuated to safer areas during World War II, starting school in 1947 as an evacuee. They weren’t able to move back to their old home until 1950. War and bombings does not make for a happy three year old, and so he has few happy childhood memories, which is why it is really amazing that he has made such happy and beautiful movies for people everywhere . In Charles Whipple’s essay, The Power Of Positive Thinking, Miyazaki told him, “I’ve forgotten much. I made up my mind to forget. There were too many thing...

He has achieved many things in his career, countess awards and fans, and has made big impacts in the world of animation. Not only did his style influence the more realistic anime style today, but the success of Nausicaa made anime much more respected by many people. Also, Princess Mononoke became the highest grossing Japanese film in Japans history in 1997. But, the achievement he probably values and is proud of most is the impact he has made on the children and viewers of all ages who see his works. Through hard work and with a passion for what he does, Hayao Miyazaki has truly become one of the most successful animators in all of Japan.
