Hardships In A Long Walk To Water

There are many hardships of life. Salva Dut experienced many of those hardships of life during his journey, having to swim across the Gilo River with Crocodiles. Most people would not be able to tolerate what Salva experienced in Linda Sue Park’s, A Long Walk to Water. Salva lived in Sudan and there was a lot of fighting going on at that time. There are many ways to describe Salva and one fitting description was as a survivor. He is described as a survivor because he lived through gunfire, bombings, dangerous wildlife, and little to no basic needs. He suffered much loss though during his journey. The first group Salva started walking with they left him behind. An old lady came up behind the group and said “Where are you going”(21). No one responded to the only lady, they left Salva alone with the old lady when he fell asleep they thought he was dead weight. She fed Salva and when a new group his tribe passed he started walking with them. In the new group he met a boy the same age, named Marial. They became very good friends until one day he woke up and found that Marial had been taken and eaten by a lion in the middle of the night. Although Salva was not able to find his parents, he did find his uncle that he had not seen in five years. His Uncle had a gun because he was in the army and now it was easier to kill animals to get food. His uncle knew about the wilderness and how to survive. While walking the rebels came and killed Salva’s Uncle right in front of him. Salva was fearful to be alone after his Uncle was killed, but knew his uncle would want him to be brave and continue on his journey. After some time, Salva begins to help others and becomes a leader of the group seeking a new
