Boys and girls, the struggle of self-definition

From Early history, we have seen gender roles being displayed in a society. As villages were created, a

more stable environment was formed, making it easier to start a family. Naturally the women became

homebound; taking care of their children and preparing food, while the men went out to hunt and

participate in other physically demanding jobs. Gradually these roles became more defined but as

societies progressed, the role of women did not. “Boys and Girls”, written by Alice Monroe is a short

story which displays the hardship of a girl in a man’s society. It shows her original aspirations of helping

her father on the farm, and the sometimes not so subtle actions taken by her family, to show a women’s
