“Happiness and Its Relation to Wisdom and Ethics” “The secret of happiness is not in doing what one likes, but in liking what one does” (James M. Barrie). Happiness is pleasure, joy, bliss, or simply the state of being happy. Aristotle would define happiness by saying “happiness appears to be something complete and self-sufficient, it being an end of our actions” (Aristotle 63). Philosophers like Aristotle see happiness as a way of life not just a certain mental state. Aristotle makes a connection with happiness and what can be obtained from it, such as reason and wisdom. Beauty may be an attractive trait or a way to find a partner or win over the man of your dreams but it will fade with time. When a person gets older and the luscious locks of hair become gray, the skin begins to wrinkle, and the walk becomes slower and more difficult the mirror image may not be so enticing as it once was. A person who seeks out a life of true happiness will embrace their old age because it is an honor to have lived for such a long time and the knowledge and wisdom acquired is far greater than the looks or appearances one has undergone. Aristotle says that “happiness above all seems to be of this character, for we always choose it on account of itself and never on account of something else” (Aristotle 62). So many times society attempts to paint a picture of what their idea of beauty is and they use models in magazines and runway shows to portray what a beautiful person should look like. Hollywood uses propaganda to influence people to believe that they can experience happiness if they looked a certain way. Every individual was made in God’s image and whatever God makes is beautiful, even if its displeasing or unattractive to another person.
