In Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, Hamlet’s insanity becomes known when he starts going through troublesome times. Hamlet’s father, which is known as Old Hamlet, was the previous king before he was unexpectedly murdered. Hamlet’s Uncle became king and also married his mother Gertrude which is what hamlet did not like. Also, in the book Hamlet was in the woods with two acquaintance and they came across the ghost of Old Hamlet to when he described to Hamlet that his brother Claudius killed him for power and also for his wife. Killing someone is not like Hamlet and he knows the consciences that he has if he does it and not repent. Hamlet does not think that he can do it and has many soliloquies debating if he should. When Hamlet is talking to himself he says, “To be or not to be” (Act 3, Scene 1 Line 64). Hamlet is basically saying should he kill himself or live. Hamlet rather kill himself than deal with any problems that go on which makes him insane also. Since The ghost told Hamlet exactly how he was killed hamlet came up with an idea. Hamlet had previously watched a play and decided to take the actors from the play and make a play of his own. The play was going to be a reenactment of what happened to his father. Depending on the reaction that Hamlet got out of Claudius it would show if he did it or not and if he would kill him. Before the play Hamlet old the actor, “Speak the speech, I pray you, as I pronounced it to you, trippingly on the tongue” (Act 3,Scene 2 Lines 1-2). Hamlet is telling the actor to act the play exactly as he had told him with many …show more content…

Hamlet’s soliloquy, “To be or not to be” (Act 3,Scene 1 Line 64) also means should he live to do as his father or or die to betray him. Hamlet knew everything that was going on in the kingdom but wanted to act as if he did not to get even further in and have more information. He did this because he wanted to think a more brilliant plan to kill Claudius and anyone else that was dealing with it, that is how he killed

A popular topic of discussion for Shakespearian critics is whether or not Hamlet is sane at various points in the play. Usually, this digresses into a question of at what point Hamlet crosses the fine line which marks the bounds of sanity into the realm of insanity. This is a confusing matter to sort out, due to the fact that it is hard to tell when the prince is acting, and when he is really and truly out of his mind. The matter of determining the time of crossing over is further complicated by the fact that everyone around him is constantly speaking of madness. At the end we must either conclude that Hamlet is an extremely talented actor capable of staying in character under the most trying circumstances, or that he is human and as a result his sanity gives way to the many external emotional barrages coming his way. The more likely conclusion is that Hamlet is at some point insane. What is left to discover is at what point does this crossover occur, and second, what are the main contributing factors in his mental collapse. I will ignore the issue of the point of crossover, and let another paper consider that point. Rather, I propose that Hamlet's religious beliefs, acquired at the University of Wittenberg, heavily contributed to the loss of his sanity.
Shakespeare's tragic hero, Hamlet, and his sanity can arguably be discussed. Many portions of the play supports his loss of control in his actions, while other parts uphold his ability of dramatic art. The issue can be discussed both ways and altogether provide significant support to either theory. There are indications from Hamlet throughout the play of his mind's well being.
... ideas that Hamlet is mad and that Hamlet is not mad. Readers and critics can agree that Hamlet is not a "man of action," but is instead a "man of reflection"-reflection that is concentrated on both himself and the world (Schucking 31).I believe it is Shakespeare's anger towards corruption and religion that makes Hamlet to fall into madness. “Finding a character in real life of a person endowed with so delicate as to border on weakness with sensibility too exquisite to allow of determined action “(Sylvia 13).While it’s difficult to point out the exact cause in Hamlet's life that lead to his insanity, one thing is for certain; he went mad, and the madness did to him what it does to everything that holds madness; it destroys whatever it touches. Insanity in The tragedy of Prince Hamlet over powered sanity which concludes that the entire play revolves around insanity
One of Hamlet’s flaws is that he over thinks things a lot and it is first shown the most at the prayer scene with Claudius. Once Hamlet sees how Claudius reacts to the play he knows that Claudius killed his father and that the ghost was right, he has a chance to kill him and doesn’t take it . His only proof was the ghost and even though others saw the ghost no one else heard it talk except Hamlet. Hamlet was also considering a lot of other things at this time, like how if he killed Claudius now Claudius would be free of sin and would go to heaven. He was also thinking if his father didn’t get to die free of sin it wouldn’t be fair for Claudius to die free of sin either, which shows how vengeful Hamlet’s character is. At the same time, Hamlet has morals and understands the consequences so that’s why it’s harder for him to perform the act . After a l...
The last thing the audience, or reader, has to fathom is where the idea to kill Claudius came from: The idea came from Hamlet's father's ghost. This is vital to understand because, going back to Hamlets persona, he won't react until he is positive in his actions. When the ghost appeared in front of hamlet in act III scene iv he was unsure of his identity and thought it was just a figment of his imagination. This is proven when Gertrude tells hamlet " Alas, how is ’t with you, that you do bend your eye on vacancy and with th' incorporal air do hold discourse?" And Hamlet then has to ask " Do you see nothing there?"
Shakespeare's play "Hamlet" is about a complex protagonist, Hamlet, who faces adversity and is destined to murder the individual who killed his father. Hamlet is a character who although his actions and emotions may be one of an insane person, in the beginning of the book it is clear that Hamlet decides to fake madness in order for his plan to succeed in killing Claudius. Hamlet is sane because throughout the play he only acts crazy in front of certain people, to others he acts properly and displays proper prince like behavior who is able to cope with them without sounding crazy, and even after everything that has been going on in his life he is able to take revenge by killing his father's murderer. In the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare Hamlet is sane but acts insane to fulfill his destiny of getting vengeance on his father's murderer.
Movies and television shows are popular forms of entertainment in today’s society. Some genres require actors to play a character who has been driven to insanity. The actors however are not insane, even if they play a character who is. Hamlet from William Shakespeare’s play “Hamlet” is largely debated to be, or not to be insane. Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” suggests that people may be just acting insane one moment, only to be truly insane the next.
Sanity is the healthy way to live life. It allows you to live a normal life and interact in a casual manner. Hamlet's insanity was thoroughly witnessed throughout the play very clearly. His mental health caused problems throughout the whole story. It started off with Hamlet's father passing away, and his father´s brother marrying his mother.
Hamlet, a younger man born into a royal family. Everything was good until his father had a tragic death, but Hamlet didn’t know that. He soon found out in time and he was VERY angry. As the time went on after the kings death, Hamlets uncle (Claudius) became the new king and also had gotten married to Hamlets mother Gertrude. Days went by and Hamlets personality had been worsening. His actions had been getting bad, words were getting worse, everyone had been basically thinking Hamlet was crazy. Why did the people of the kingdom think he was crazy maybe? For example they thought he was crazy because he had killed Ophelias father Polonius and won’t tell where he hid the body. He also has violent outbursts towards his mother and Ophelia. Hamlet wasn’t
Introduction In the play Hamlet by Shakespeare, the character Hamlet faces sorrows and tribulations after he finds out his father has died to the new king, Claudius. This series of events leads Hamlet to adopt a way of thinking that leads to characters thinking he is insane. However, Hamlet’s emotions do not inhibit his ability to reason enough to be considered “insane” at the times of murder. The Prosecution accuses Hamlet with manslaughter of Polonius and second degree murder of King Claudius.
Hamlet's public persona is a facade he has created to carry out his ulterior motives. The outside world's perception of him as being mad is of his own design. Hamlet is deciding what he wants others to think about him. Polonius, a close confidant of the King, is the leading person responsible for the public's knowledge of Hamlet's madness. The idea that Hamlet is mad centers around the fact that he talks to the ghost of his dead father. He communicates with his dead father's ghost twice, in the presence of his friends and again in the presence of his mother. By being in public when talking to the ghost, the rumor of his madness is given substance.
The theme of madness is quite prevalent in Shakespeare's Hamlet. The play begins in Denmark with the death of King Hamlet. His son, prince Hamlet, is suspicious of the mysterious and unsolved murder and investigates the alleged murderer the new king Claudius. Throughout the play, many characters experienced some form of insanity, each for different reasons. Hamlet for example initially seeked revenge for his father’s death and over time became mad due to his vengeful desire.
Several emotions engulf Shakespeare’s Hamlet throughout the play, the most famous being Hamlet’s own emotional state. His madness, triggered by his incestuous uncle, has led several scholars to explore the psychological causes of his behavior. This research into Hamlet’s madness will explore his state in comparison to other characters, the psychoanalytic studies behind his actions, and defining whether his insanity is genuine or another play within the play.
The theme of Madness is presented throughout the whole story of Hamlet by William Shakespeare. The theme of madness focuses on the main character Hamlet from the story. When he meets his father’s ghost until the end of the story Hamlet starts to act or become insane. He says that he is going to pretend to be insane to exact revenge upon Claudius for killing his father.
