The historical play about Denmark’s royal family follows the basic outline structure known as the Freytag pyramid. Shakespeare implies the pyramid structure using the five acts, which builds the intensity of the drama before revealing the tragic plot. The play not only stresses his feelings and thoughts but also his philosophy on life after death as well. What action Hamlet doesn’t take in the beginning is as important as what he does in the end. Should this young prince eager to be the noble king some day, revenge his father’s unruly death? That is the question! Returning home for his father’s funeral, Hamlet encounters many problems with the family leadership. The exposition in Hamlet is full of information, because the audience needs to comprehend the situation surrounding Denmark to appreciate some of the characters’ motives. The setting takes place at the King’s castle in Denmark, after a short war with their rivals in Norway. The conflict between these two countries is the background context for the tragedies that follow in Denmark. King Hamlet kills the King of Norway in a single ambush and upon his retreat home dies from a deliberate poisoning by his brother. Fortinbras, the prince Norway, in turn makes his own plans for revenge. Fortinbras gathers a group of evil men and sets out to return to Denmark to revenge his own father’s death. Opening scenes around the castle reveal the Demark guards on duty day and night, in fear of attack from Norway. Hamlet by William Shakespeare is one of the world’s most revered literature. The main character, Hamlet, is arguably one of the most intriguing characters the playwright ever developed. Hamlet is daring, philosophical, mentally unstable at times, and clever. Throughout the play though, these characteristics change and/or diminish as Hamlet is put through a plethora of unfortunate events. His father is murdered by Claudius, his mother soon after marries Claudius, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern betray him, and his girlfriend most likely commits suicide. While Hamlet is incredibly philosophical, indecisive, and full of resentment in the beginning of the play, he becomes violent, instinctive, caring and sympathetic towards the end of the play.

It’s a really remarkable play, and to see all these sons seeking revenge for there fathers really speaks about the human tendency to overlook key things; if you are the cause of such hatred what hate can be created because of that, this is what ultimately Shakespeare is trying to show us through “Hamlet” and to show it in such a way is a perfect example of this.

The deterioration of the diseased state is aligned with his detached relationship with all women as a result of Gertrude’s betrayal to King Hamlet which makes Hamlet question his very existence and the need to restore the natural order of kings. Hamlet has endured the test of time as it still identifies with a modern audience through the dramatized issues concerning every human’s critical self and is a representation of their own experience of the bewildering human condition, as Hamlet struggles to pursuit justice as a result of an unwise desire for revenge.
As often associated with a tragedy, a conflict usually ensues between a protagonist and another force in the play. A tragedy is ‘a serious drama typically describing a conflict between the protagonist and a superior force and having a sorrowful or disastrous conclusion that elicits pity or terror’ (Webster's dictionary). Given its structure and depth in characterization, this play will or can be analyzed and interpreted from various perspectives and beliefs. However, my analysis of the play is conducted on the basis of various components which are: Hamlet as a tragic hero, the ironic message conveyed in the play, the roles of its characters, the role and personification of madness, the role of paranormality, the role of friends and family, the role of inaction, the role of sex and violence, and the role of death as portrayed in the play. Based on literary definitions and portrayal of his character, there is popular belief that Hamlet as the protagonist acted to satisfy his own conscience but could his actions be attributed purely to his desire or was he being influenced by other factors?
