Throughout the years, Canada has had many important historical events such as the devastating Halifax Explosion in 1917. In the beginning the explosion of the Mont Blanc destroyed a vital city, permanently scarred the tissue of thousands of hearts, and left a country to weep in remembrance of their loss. The events of the Halifax explosion damaged Canada but also made her stronger and remains her most defining moment. During the year of 1917, a massive explosion in the harbor of Halifax destroyed an essential city to Canada and left the entire country to pick up the pieces. With the steadily increasing crowd and spectators attracted to the fire, the higher the number of children and adults wounded and killed. Naturally attracted to flame, thousands travelled closer to the Mont Blanc only to be caught in the crossfire, wounded and/or killed in the blast that followed nearly 20 minutes after. Although Halifax was one of Canada’s most important cities at the time, the explosion and following tsunami killed more than its fair share. Almost 2000 people killed, not to mention the countless number drowned in the following two days and the 9000 more that were wounded (Kitz, 1917). Despite the amount of destruction Halifax was already put through, they were gifted with the presence of a severe winter blizzard the next day (Kernaghan, 2011). This flurry of snow not only froze survivors onto their deathbeds but made the task of rebuilding the city three times more difficult.
