Habitat for Humanity International Inc. is a 501(c)3 Christian nonprofit organization centered in Americus, Georgia that constructs and repairs houses throughout the world for low-income families. Millard and Linda Fuller founded the organization in 1976, with whom were inspired to develop the organization after first visiting Koinonia Farm in 1965 for a service venture. Millard and Clarence Jordan, a farmer at Koinonia, created the idea of “partnership housing” where volunteers aid low-income people build suitable housing. Today, Habitat has built and repaired over 800,000 homes (“The History of Habitat”). Therefore, in this paper, there will be a discussion of Habitat for Humanity’s mission and its strategies for developing nations versus developed nations. Additionally, there will be an examination of the effectiveness, composition, and efficiency of the working boards of Habitat’s affiliate organizations, the impact the organization is making on their “partner” families and their communities, the problems the organization is facing and whether it is fully carrying out its mission to the highest capacity. Finally, there will be an examination of the organization’s Strategic Plan for 2014-2018 and whether their new approaches will increase their capacity, impact, and effectiveness. Habitat mission is that it “believes that every man, woman and child should have a decent, safe and affordable place to live…” Therefore, the organization constructs and repairs homes throughout the world through its vast volunteer base, donated materials, and support through donations. It has had great success and sustainability through its large volunteer base and connection with the local communities with its numerous affiliate organizations. “... ... middle of paper ... ...g and other resources. Also, the organization needs to bring in more community members to its affiliates boards if it wants to effectively have an impact in the community and understand the personal hardships they are working to address with their services. Hopefully, Habitat will enact the plans they have laid out in their “Strategic Plan for 2014-2018” to include their partnership with NGOs in developing nations and the use of MFH loans as well as having a set marketing plan and increasing their marketing operations. Therefore, the organization would have increased funding and tangible resources for its operations, allowing it to offer higher quality services to more families in need across the world. All in all, this sustainable organization has many problems that can be properly addressed and solved through better management, marketing, and financial strategies.

While they have recently made huge strides it still feels as if the problem is merely being pushed away to be dealt with at a later time. A major farce is the lack of a major or minor department to handle the problem, not counting the local law enforcement that usually just punishes these out of luck few. Without a proper department or agency assigned to the problem, how can one being to fix it. Quite similar to trying to make lemonade without any lemons at our disposal. A huge step forward was made recently as of November 17, 2015. The Orange County board of supervisors approved purchase of a building at 1000 North Kraemer Place in Anaheim. This building will be used as a year round emergency shelter and multi service center to serve the homeless in North Orange County cities. This has been apart of the Ten Year Plan To End Homelessness which has been attributed with the idea of ending major homeless problems in Orange County by 2020. Sadly not much else has been achieved by this group with good intentions that could lead the forefront in solving the issue plaguing our city. It seems that most of the money backing this program is needs to be raised, and an approximation of 100 to 150 thousand dollars per year would be needed. In a better light there are tons of programs and homeless shelters located all around Anaheim and Orange County itself. These can range from different

the cost of living in Toronto has come to a record high, we need to start doing something about it now before no one can afford to live at all. There are more than 30,000 women, men and children in the city's homeless shelters annually. Many of thousands more sleep on the streets or considered the “hidden homeless”. About 70,000 households are on Toronto’s social housing waiting list and on the brink of becoming homeless because of the skyrocketing prices of owning a home in Toronto. The Federal Government and the province have begun a slow reinvestment in housing in past years, the number of affordable housing being built now doesn’t even compare near the levels of the early 1980’s. Habitat for Humanity has been building houses for low income
I finally got exposure to the low-income families with my grandfather. My grandfather is the person who got me involved in the Habitat work. He is a retired construction teacher and he has taught me many carpentry and handyman skills. I have done a Blitz Build before and I enjoyed it very much. I love doing that type of work and it is even more fun when I get to help out a family with my skills. At Clemson I got to practice these skills once again when my English class helped work on a Habitat house. Now we are assisting the actual Habitat organization by making a promotional brochure. I think that all students should get involved with an organization such as Habitat for Humanity. Doing this will bring them to a closer understanding of what it is like to live in a low income or even homeless family.
This group has been a crucial piece for the homeless right to shelter. Before this group, homeless people have struggled to find places to stay and usually would sleep in the streets. But because of the the Coalition, homeless people have the option to sleep in shelters. The organization helps on average 3,500 men, women and children who are homeless in a day. They are actively giving support to the homeless by “provide emergency food and blankets, eviction prevention, crisis services and individual advocacy, permanent housing, job training and special
The fundamental cause of chronic homelessness in the state of Idaho is its widening housing affordability gap coupled with its immense population growth. The state is constantly pushing out housing in order to keep up with the large number of incoming citizens. However, due to the high listing prices for the units, 65% of the state’s population are left unable to afford even the smallest form of housing. In effect, leaving its residents without a permeant place to live and thousands of housing units untouched. Which allows Idaho the chance to implement it own version of Utah’s “Housing First Project”. With thousands of housing units already available, all Idaho has to do is ‘gives homes to the homeless’.
Therefore, the supply of housing that is affordable and accessible to low income people should be increased. Plus assistance that allows people to reach adequate stability should be regarded as a good investment in a productive society, in order to attain our objective. First we could start by introducing more productive assistance programs that actually focus on helping those in need of housing assistance. These programs will analyze how long people are homeless, what are their needs, the causes of homelessness, and in all how many are currently without a home. Subsequently, the City of Austin would begin building affordable housing according to the amount necessary.
Racial discrimination still lives in this country, especially in the housing market. This has become a major concern for racial minorities. The issues prevalence and persistence has created an almost overwhelming amount of socio-economic issues within racial minorities. This issue in particular has sparked many disputes on the topic of racism and whether it is even still an occurring issue. The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has conducted several studies which revealed that discriminatory acts between potential home buyers and the property seller are still persistent. According to the National Low-Income Housing Coalition, HUD conducted a test to see if these claims were viable: “[The test consisted of] well- qualified white and minority (black, Hispanic, and Asian) testers who contacted housing providers to schedule in-person meetings and view available units. Tests were conducted in 28 metropolitan areas across the country in both rental and sale markets” (“National Low-Income Housing Coalition”). The results of this test supported these assumptions because minority renters and white renters were equally able to make an appointment for a particular property. However, minority testers were explicitly told that there were fewer options available. There were instances where the housing providers were not willing to meet with them. It has also been reported for “both Black/ White and Hispanic/White tests an average incidence of [twelve percent] of steering that promoted racial/ethnic segregation” (George and Godfrey, 254) .There are many theories about why this discrimination type occurs. The most reoccurring theory is that racial minorities are assumed to be high-risk applicants in the real estate market. These p...
Supporting Material: There are families that are living in poverty in our community that have significant needs that need to be addressed.
The Charity Organization Society was based in the scientific movement of organizations. Workers believed that charity work needed more definition and organization and that charity should be focused more on individual need rather than as a whole population. Focusing on individual need was intended to improve relief operations while making resources more efficient. They also intended to eliminate public outdoor relief. With the promotion of more organization and efficiency the new Charity Organization Societies were born. Trattner states that these new requirements for organization and efficiency spread so “rapidly that within 6 years 25 cities had such organizations and by the turn of the century there were some 138 of them in existence” (Trattner, 1999).
Some people that live in poverty do not have anywhere to call home, others “die quietly in some of the poorest villages on earth, far removed from the scrutiny and the conscience of the world” (Shah 1). “The modern urban household is an extremely expensive thing” (Galbraith 508); this is why we, the people, should provide safe and affordable shelter for families in need of an improved shelter or a shelter at all. A variety of organizations exist to construct homes for low-income individuals. These organizations include both faith-based enterprises and secular groups. In either case, these organizations tend to utilize donated supplies, cash support and volunteer labor to build durable, safe homes for economically disadvantaged individuals and families. One of the most popular organization is an ecumenical Christian ministry, Habitat for Humanity. Habitat for Humanity began constructing homes for poor families in 1976. By the end of 2009, the organization constructed over 350,000 homes in 3,000 communities around the world. During the period from its founding through the end of 2009, Habitat for Humanity provided safe, comfortable homes for over 1.75 million people. As you can see, this organization has improved the lives of many and continues to do so. Providing homes for the people in need of a safe shelter will improve the success of society and lead us out of
