One person is killed by a gun every 17 minutes, 87 people are killed during an average day, and 609 are killed every week. Every day in the U.S., an average of 289 people are shot. Eighty-six of them die, 30 are murdered, 53 kill themselves, two die accidentally, and one is a police officer being shot in the situation of closing in on the gun holder . This is a average that is really ridiculous, if they inflicted these laws that they say are established then rates should be decreasing quickly. Most guns are generally classified into three types: handguns, rifles, and shotguns. Rifles and shotguns are both considered long guns. A semi-automatic gun shoots exactly one bullet each time the trigger is pulled, it then removes the shell of the bullet, and automatically replaces it with another bullet for the next shot. The fully-automatic gun also known by many people as a machine gun shoots numerous bullets with only one pull of the trigger. The Washington D.C. City Council made a law on September 24, 1976 generally banning residents from having handguns and making sure that all guns in private homes be kept unloaded and for the time being inoperable or must contain some sort of trigger lock. In 1920, Britain made a rule that everybody must have a certificate from their district police chief in order to buy or have any guns except a shotgun. To get the certificate, the person had to pay a fee, and the chief of police had to be satisfied that the person had a good reason for getting the certificate and did not bring danger to the public safety or to the peace. The certificate had to specify the types and amount of guns and ammo that the person could purchase. If we understand why people are joining gangs we can do more to help stop them. Many people who've a hard and struggling life with no money often join gangs because they can make money illegally through theft and drug dealing. Others are brought into the gang by other gang members and are pressured to the point where they have no choice but to join. Kids who live in boredom with nothing to do or are careless about the things in life join gangs because they have nothing else to do with their lives. Many who live in deep depression with the thought in their head that they will never find a better life or good job join because they feel that, that is where they belong. Kids with a high lack of family attention or love join because gangs provide them with a family and a sense of belonging.
Gangs have been in existence since the beginning of the Roman Empire. There were speeches made by Roman orator, Marcus Tullius Cicero, which references groups of men who constantly fought and disrupted Roman politics (Curry, 2013). The history of street gangs in the United States begins with their emergence on the East Coast around 1783, as the American Revolution ended. Though many believe the best available evidence suggests that the more serious street gangs likely did not emerge until the early part of the nineteenth century (Sante, 1991). Although our country has had their share of feared gangs like in the 1980’s with the turf war between the Bloods and Crips, back in the 17th and 18th century the Mohocks of Georgian, England were one of the most feared gangs. What draws juveniles to the gang lifestyle? Many people will say that most gang members are children from impoverished communities, single family homes where there was no father present, or maybe there is a more psychological/sociological answer? By appearance and presence most gangs cause fear, crime, and disillusionment in the communities they occupy. Throughout history joining a gang has been perceived as a life without any reward, yet by joining this lifestyle many juveniles are able to gain the needed stability and security in their lives.
Individuals generally join a gang as young adults but, are sometimes recruited as early on as elementary school. Society generally sees gangs as dangerous groups to stay away from, but for a young person on the street, a gang offers a sense of family. Gangs present the benefit of protection and being part of a pack. When Latin Americans came to the United States as illegal immigrants they had very few resources and were essentially homeless. A simple solution was to join a gang. Mara Salvatrucha 13 profited from this scenario, exponentially growing in strength and size (Illegal Immigrant Gangs Commit Most U.S. Crime, 2009). An initial reason for the formation of Mara Salvatrucha 13 was for the immigrant’s protection from other gangs, but eventually ended up greatly surpassing their competition in both size and strength (2009).
This paper will cover issues that young minorities encounter in the movies; Crips and Bloods: Made in America (2008), Gran Torino (2008), A Better Life (2011). Movies will be summarize, and compare and contrast youths experienced. Criminological theories shall be utilized to further elaborate issues. The Federal Government today is putting forth much effort in order to control the purchase and registration of handguns. In 1993, Congress approved the Brady Bill that requires a mandatory five-day waiting period when buying a gun. The recent school shootings have pushed Congress to pass a bill requiring approximately 80% of handguns to be produced with child safety locks. The ultimate goal of the government is to ban the sale of firearms to the public. By starting out small, and having big goals, later generations will enjoy peaceful lives.

The kids became gang members for many reasons. Some needed to find what their place was in the world, and they needed to know who they were as human beings. Joining the gang gave them a feeling of being involved in something and made them feel better about themselves. They felt that as a gang member they received the attention, emotional support, and understanding that they couldn’t get from their actual family members at home.
I have come to realize that gang numbers are increasing, not just in New York but also in other cities. Young offenders that now are in gangs feel the need to join a gang because of the non acceptance they are receiving from family or friends. The research shows that
Social Class Most of the gang members that have been reported come from the lower social economical class. When these kids are out in the streets they have nothing better to do so they begin to commit delinquent behavior. Since these economically challenged kids have no money to go anywhere, they tend to hang around their neighborhood. These kinds of groups encourage each other to commit criminal activity. They feel that if one does it, all of them can do it too.
When our forefathers sat down to write the bill of rights they made ten basic rules or freedoms that all Americans are entitled to. For hundreds of years no one has questioned any of those freedoms, that is until recent years. The second amendment gives Americans the right to bear arms. The purpose of this amendment is to be able to form a militia in order to be able to overthrow a repressive government. In recent years the availability and number of guns in the United States has increased. With the media tracking and recording violence, some Americans have begun to question the 2nd amendment’s relevance.
Ensuring peace among citizens should be the top priority of any government. In the United States, especially in New York City, race relations have been a subject that has constantly been brought up, usually in a negative subject matter. What kinds of disputes, exactly, are causing these tense situations? The fact that the minorities feel that they can not trust the police officers, combined with the fact that many of the officers fear for their lives when on duty in a minority neighborhood both contribute to the constant feuding between New Your City's citizens. Both the minority citizens and the police officers have certain ideas about the other that lead to their deep mistrust of each other.
Guns and violence have some long lasting effects on not only the crime rate, but the rights that people have to own guns themselves. Even though the violence is a factor in why many believe that guns should be banned, guns should be allowed and not banned because they should be allowed because of the laws and the rights of citizens allow them there rights. As Supreme Court Cases rage on about how a cities ban on handguns could break amendments, this is how the topic has gained from it (Hoxie 474). As crime statistics begin to rise there are many reasons that they need to work on the juvenile justice system (Collier 478). The other topic of the age could become a factor is another point that many think needs to be changed, as a 13 year old child could commit murder, they would not be sentenced as severely as an adult (Cohen 481). The ethic and laws play a huge effect on guns and violence because of the effects it has on crime, and the citizens themselves play a huge role on the society that they live in.
The United States has a long history with the establishment of gun control laws. In 1791, the 2nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified, declaring “the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” New York passed the “Sullivan Act” in 1911, which allowed someone to purchase a gun with a permit required. This was just the beginning. In 1934, Congress passed the “National Firearms Act” which gave someone a $200 tax on gun sales requiring guns to be registered with the treasury. the “Gun Control Act” was passed in 1968, outlawing mail order sales of rifles and guns. Also, Bill Clinton signed the “Violent Crime Control” and “Law Enforcement Act” into law in 1994, which banned the manufacture and sales of assault weapons. The Supreme Court in 1997 declared background checks of the “Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act” unconstitutional which has left a huge impact on society, in which guns are getting in the hands of people with mental illness. Overall, gun control laws have had a long history with the United States, with much more to come.
My first reason is some kids doesn't talk to the parents about their problems, if they join the gangs then they can talk and solve their problems from the gangs member. Though some of the kids have parents, but their parents doesn't love and take care of them like Johnny. From the S.E Hinton's novel “The Outsiders”, I got though johnny have his mother, but his mother never take care him. She didn't love him and never showing affection for him. So he just left his family and come and join the Greasers gang. In the gangs he get much more love from the Greasers, specially from the Dally, who is the most toughest guy of the Greasers. Most of the gangs people doesn't have family also, so they can join the gangs
There are various reasons behind young people joining street gangs. One of the reasons young people join street gangs is because of neighborhood disadvantages. A theory that can contribute to why young people might join street gangs is Social Disorganization Theory. Social Disorganization theory assumes that “delinquency emerges in neighborhoods where neighborhood relation and social institutions have broken down and can no longer maintain effective social controls (Bell, 2007).” Social Disorganization contributes to residential instability and poverty, which affects interpersonal relationships within the community and opens opportunities for crimes to be committed.
The gang life contains many negative aspects including the most notorious reason for violence, drugs. Getting high seems appealing to many students but with the excitement of getting high comes the responsibility of buying and selling the drugs. The biggest reason for a gang to start would be drugs. Marijuana might seem like a harmless drug but it can be the most dangerous drug to start doing. When someone smokes marijuana it attracts them to use other drugs and these addictions need gang support. Addictions attract young kids to this lifestyle to keep themselves supplied with drugs.
