Guns should most certainly be more closely monitored and controlled in the United States. However, this does not mean that we should get rid of guns altogether. Unfortunately, owning guns in America is not only very common, but these weapons are also extremely obtainable. When there are so many guns in the United States, it makes these detonating objects available to the most dangerous people. With so many guns, it makes it much easier for these weapons to land in the wrong hands. Such opportunity leads to an increase in mass shootings. Wilkinson agrees when he states, “a lack of strong gun-control is the reason America has such a high incidence of mass shootings”. While guns are used to kill, they are also bought and stored as an object that provides comfort, and reassurance of individual safety. Civilians feel that they need guns to protect themselves, and secure their household and family. Wilkinson reports that “the percentage of Americans who believe that having a gun in the house makes them safer has doubled since 2000”. This is sheer proof that with an increase of mass shooting, comes an increase of guns in the United States. One reason for such an increase is that our society feels that the only way to protect themselves from being shot, is to own a gun themselves. If our communities “didn’t feel so threatened by America’s violent tendencies, they’d be less likely to want to arm themselves in response” (Wilkinson). Basically, Wilkinson is saying that without controlling mass shootings, the number of guns in the United States will skyrocket. In relation, if guns were to be restricted, Americans would be stripped from their own feeling of safety. Although something must be done about guns, taking them away is not the
