Gun control continues to be a controversial issue for many, especially in the wake of so many recent, tragic mass shootings in the United States this year alone. With gun control being such a polarizing issue, it is difficult for both sides of different parties to agree to certain terms. With impactful events like the Columbine shooting of 1999, to the rising rate of lives being taken by guns, the issues surrounding gun control continue to grow.
Some issues that have created the need for gun control to be established include mass shootings at schools and heavily populated public settings, accidental deaths of children or others, misuse of guns in impoverished areas, and deaths by firearm in suicides or crimes of passion. According to the Gun Violence Archive, a nonprofit website that follows gun deaths and injuries, there have been 53,039 incidents in the United States involving a gun. Their research also determined that there were 13,385 deaths by guns in the year 2015, which grew significantly compared to the 12,587 deaths in 2014.
