In the cleverly written and witty story of Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift, the reader is taken on a journey that targets the strengths of weakness of different societies. Swift ingeniously incorporates the use of the main character, Lemuel Gulliver, and his experiences through the discovery of several islands in order to relay messages about his own country’s system of politics, society, and use of scientists. The first voyage Lemuel Gulliver sets foot on is to the distant and strange island of Lilliput. In this outlandish island rank, politics, international war, lose all of their significance. The natives of Lilliput bare a strikingly similar resemblance to human beings with only one trivial difference of standing three inches tall. Swift gradually begins to incorporate the Lilliputians into the story in order to satirize the pure evil and corrupt side of human nature. An Emperor who holds all but some of the power throughout the country leads the government of Lilliput. However, the reader soon discovers the microscopic cracks within the government system that allow corruption to take form and flourish. Although the Emperor is supposed to stand as the highest level of authority and supreme decision maker, he has one weakness that discredits all his strengths combined. His weakness is the inability to make a decision and stand firm against all other influences. The Emperor’s small groups of advisors acknowledge this weakness and use every opportunity to their advantage in order to alter the Emperor’s decisions and satisfy their own desires. This corrupt system is very similar to our own for congress essentially has equal power to the president and can highly influence other political leaders. Finally, our society has not changed in regards to behaviors. Throughout the world, one can witness the cruel acts of murder, robbery, incest, lust, and disregard for others’ customs and opinions. Truthfully, I believe that if human beings were put on a stranded island with no tools for survival, everyone would turn into yahoos. All in all Jonathan Swift beautifully incorporated different aspects of society, politics, and science of his time period into the story of Gulliver’s Travels. Swift ingeniously uses Lemuel Gulliver and his experiences through the discovery of enchanting and life altering islands in order to make the reader fully understand the importance of an uncorrupt government with an orderly and academic driven society.
