The Group of Four and the reform of the UN Security Council
The primary goal of the Security Council is to maintain global peace and security. Security Council is one of the six original principal organs of the United Nations. According under the United Nations Charter, the functions and powers of the Security Council is a principle organ that charged with many things here are nine of the 1“maintain international peace and security in accordance with the principles and purposes of the United Nations”. 2”Investigate any dispute or situation, which might lead to international friction”. 3“Recommend methods of adjusting such disputes or the terms of settlement”. ”Formulate plans for the establishment of a system to regulate armaments”. 5“Determine the existence of a threat to the peace or act of aggression and to recommend what action should be taken”. 6“Call on Members to apply economic sanctions and other measures not involving the use of force to prevent or stop aggression”. 7“Take military action against an aggressor and recommend the admission of new Members. 8”Exercise the trusteeship functions of the United Nations in strategic areas”. 9“Recommend to the General Assembly the appointment of the Secretary-General and, together with the Assembly, to elect the Judges of the International Court of Justice” and many more.

The United Nation Security Council has fifteen members. Five permanent members United Kingdom, United States, France, Russia, and China empowered with a veto. And remaining ten are non-permanent members elected by the General Assembly from particular regions. ...llection” and that’s basically regional rivals, you got countries like Mexico and Argentina which don’t want Brazil to become permanent member, and Pakistan which don’t want India to become a permanent member in the Security Council and so on. And finally you have African bloc, which is asking for two permanent members in Security Council.
At the end the day people who watch the United Nation closely don’t believe either those two groups would try to stand in way of a resolution that would make them a permanent member of the United Nation Security Council. So that basically leaves the United States, the big question here is will the United States grasp this nettle and exercise leadership in pushing forward in this stage enlargement its in interest that would command the power some of the major establish and emerging countries that aren’t there, only time will tell.
