According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, grit in the context of behavior is defined as “firmness of character; indomitable spirit.” Angela Duckworth, author of Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance, tweaked this definition, with her studies, to be “perseverance and passion for long-term goals.” Duckworth argues grit is built from the inside out through four elements: interest, passion, purpose and hope. Through these elements, a growth mindset is born and nourished; “being optimistic and having a growth mindset leads to a grittier person” (Duckworth 182). So why do people need grit? Grit allows people to persevere. Grit builds resilience and in turn, allows a person to maintain optimism and discipline in the face of rejection, discomfort or lack of progress.
On Carol Dweck’s website, she claims “in a fixed mindset, people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits”. Those with fixed mindsets do not grow on their traits they have; they believe talent alone creates success. These people are settlers. They spend their time speaking about their talent rather than expanding their traits. Dweck also expands on the topic by explaining a growth mindset is developing and expanding on basic abilities through dedication and hardwork: “virtually all great people have had these qualities”. Dweck states people then create resilience and a love of development. A specified language and way of speaking comes in addition to just obtaining a growth mindset. Chances are, the language used with children after accomplishments, those children now describe victories and defeats. The language subtly sends a message: “life is a challenge and learning to do what you couldn’t do before” (Duckworth 18...

...vers and tend to be in better health than pessimists. Psychologist Martin Seligman demonstrated optimism can be learned. Seligman contends anyone can make use of learned optimism, regardless of how pessimistic a person’s outlook. He developed a test to determine people’s level of optimism. To start the process of learned optimism, one must first understand their own beliefs and reactions to adversity. Research has also shown a positive relation between challenging negative self-talk and increases in optimism.
One characteristic of gritty people, as described by Angela Duckworth, is they are “especially motivated to seek happiness”. These gritty people accomplish their goals through a growth mindset, optimism, and the Law of Attraction. Through grit, resilience is enhanced and people can maintain discipline in the face of rejection, discomfort or lack of progress.
