Introduction - What is Global Warming and how it works
Ever since the Industrial Revolution in 1700, Green House Gas Emissions increased drastically. Up until now, these gases have changed Earth’s climate, making it hotter every year. This is called global warming and it became a problem. Earth’s temperature has increased by 0.85 Degrees Celsius from the year 1880 to 2012.
If this goes on, the Earth will suffer from increased natural disasters, animals unable to adapt to the weather and die out, ice caps from the poles will melt completely and eventually the Earth will become inhabitable.
First of all, we need to know what and how these green house gases collaborate to cause global warming. Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Nitrous Oxide (N2O), Methane (CH4) and especially water vapor are the main gases that increases the Earth’s temperature. These gases block the heat of the Earth from escaping.
Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) are a type of green house gas that depletes the Ozone layer, which is a layer of gas that prevent the Sun’s ultraviolet radiation from damaging life. Carbon dioxide, one of the greenhouse gases, have increased by 30 percent. This will go on until the time where the entire human population has been wiped out.
What are the causes of these gas emissions?
As said before, the Industrial Revolution is somewhat responsible of this scenario. As humans tend to grow greedy for money, the growth of factories and machinery increases. Conclusion
If we did stop all Green House Gas emissions, we will most likely stop climate change as it is the prime problem of global warming. This will take a long time, not years but probably centuries if humans did not care as it they did today. If people were to care about global warming, this problem would have been solved a long time ago. This is because, in order to solve a problem, you need to go into the problem itself and fix it within. Many lives will be saved from natural disasters but as we know, majority of the human race are so selfish that they do not care about what happens to the Earth or anyone else, only themselves.
First, during the last few decades the Earth is experiencing greater rate of rising temperatures due to greenhouse gases that are being produced by human activities rather than because of environmental reasons, such as solar or volcanic activities. Of course, it is unfair to say that global warming is caused entirely by humans. For example, people can not have an impact on the position of Earth in relation to the sun, or on the galactic density, or such nature events as air emissions of volcanic gases. As a result of these environmental factors, Earth usually had higher rates of temperature fluctuations during the previous million years than it has in later centuries. The Greenhouse Effect occurs when all of the heat is being trapped which involves elements like CH4, N2O, O3. But , the one thing that causes global warming is CO2 ( Schlosser). The society has to remember that not only the elements cause this change , critics are causing the climate change also. For example , fire is natural and beneficial but it can also cause the weather to change because it releases carbon monoxide , and all of that goes up into the atmosphere which can cause global change. Not only does it cause warm temperatures but it also disrupts ecosystems pushing those to extinction for those who can’t adapt. There is also the Greenhouse effect temperatures. In addition to lowering greenhouse gas levels and using cleaner energy sources, there are things we can do as people to stop climate change. We could reduce our use of electricity at our homes by turning off the lights when we leave the room, turning down/up the heating/ac when it is unnecessary, and using less water. Also, we could install solar panels in our homes and donate money to environmental protection agencies. What is already happening is only the tip of the melting iceberg, for it is our children and grandchildren who may suffer most from the effects of climate change. The effects of climate change are likely to be severe and irreparable. If we do not reduce the rate of climate change, hundreds of millions of people may be exposed to famine, water shortages, extreme weather conditions and a 20-30% loss of animal and plant species. The greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. “Carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere when solid waste, fossil fuels, and wood are burned.” (2) The gases help to warm the surface of the Earth.
