Hard classes. New people. Clubs and organizations. School spirit. Greek life. Tiny dorm rooms. This is college. It is a place where many great things and many bad things can happen. Though you shouldn’t be scared. Life happens in ways you would never expect. While in college, everyone tells you to get as much out of it that you can and that these four years (well hopefully four years) will challenge and change you for the better. However, before you start, there’s a few things you should know. These things will help you start your journey through something as crazy and cool as college.

You cannot just walk in and breeze through it. There will be many roadblocks along the way and you are going to have to actively work through them. When dealing with a roadblock, you must first ask yourself what is the roadblock in particular and how it started. You need to use this information to help determine what to do about the problem and how it will affect me in the long run. If you cannot figure out a solution to your roadblock on your own, your professors and other individuals on campus are here to help you and talk to you about it. A common roadblock for students and especially freshman is doubt about your major or career choice. They may be afraid that what they want to do in life won’t make them any money or that what they want to do now will bore them to death in ten years. I personally have struggled through this dilemma and would like to briefly share it with you. When I came into college, I knew exactly what I wanted to do and no hard class or judgmental person was going to stop me. I was completely confident in being a surgeon. However, when my grades started to drop and self-doubt started to kick in, I wondered if this was right for me. This roadblock made me want to give up even though school had just started. I have heard so many stories of people forgetting their high school friends or going weeks without contacting their families. This is absurd to me because these people are central to my life in college. Luckily my best friend from high school is also going to Georgia Southern, so keeping up with him is not hard. However, if he did not go here, I would still stay in contact because the people in my past remind me of how far I have come. My family’s role in my life is a constant reminder that I have people who will always love and support me. They tell me I can be who I want to be if I just keep trying. Keeping in touch with these people severally boost your confidence and well-being in school. They will stick by your side and push you to be the best you can
