Never before in history did any monument receive such wide attention from the public and media like the Great Sphinx of Giza. The 73.5m long and 20m high (Dieter Arnold) stone carved statue not only fascinates people from all around the world, but also created countless movie ideas, novels, video games and raises questions to those who are interested. Undoubtedly, Sphinx has become one of the most notable figures of ancient Egyptian culture just beside the pyramids in the eyes of westerners. However, many questions remained in mysteries for almost decades until the excavation of 1925 by Emile Baraize revealed the Sphinx’s exotic design to the world's view. Why did the ancient Egyptians build this massive structure? For what purpose would they want to invest such resources and labors to initiate such complex project? How was it built and how did the Egyptians overcome the enormous difficulties with past technologies? The purpose of this paper would be discussing the possible identity of whom the Sphinx might be and compare and analyze the evidence from a material culture point of view. The paper would be lay out to four different sections. First part would briefly describe the purpose of this study as well as giving a brief modern history of the Sphinx. Second part would be discussing the style/meaning and its association and context with the pyramids of the Giza and how the Sphinx was built. The third part would be discussing kings who possibly commissioned the Sphinx to be built and analyze the style of the Pyramid to the style of those kings. Two kings that could be the owner of the Sphinx are Khafra and Khufu, which would be my main focus here and I would be discussing the pros and cons of the scholars’ different ideas. Last p...
The construction of the Djoser’s step pyramid would launch the beginning of an ambitious pyramid building program that would end with the Great Pyramids at Giza. Imhotep, the man credited with designing the step pyramid, would eventually be deified some 1,400 years later (Grimal).
...to their age and brittleness, it is difficult to gain permission to explore them, and while historians wait, more evidence is lost as it crumbles away. The majority of the mystery involving how the pyramids were built is derived from the lack of internal evidence that archeologists can access. As of today, the 3 most commonly used theories have been the external ramp theory, the modified external ramp theory and most recently, the internal ramp theory. Although the chances of the external and modified ramp theories being correct are slim, the evidence supporting their existence might have worn away by now, especially if the material that was used to build the ramps was weaker than that of the pyramids. This thought indirectly challenges the internal ramp theory as well because it also mentions the use of external ramps in building the bottom half of the monument.
Conclusion: The reason we are not aware of many facts about the Ancient Egyptian Pyramid is it is actually not available as the Egyptians built it without leaving any clues on how they
The context was a very important aspect in the construction of the Pyramids of Giza, as it provided the means that made the construction of these pyramids possible. The Pyramids of Giza are situated on the west bank of the Nile River in Giza, Northern Egypt, a short distance from Memphis, the capital of Egypt at the time. The Nile River was one of Egypt’s main reasons for it’s prosperity, so for the pyramids to be located alongside the Nile made perfect sense for the Pharaoh’s of the 4th Dynasty. 1 The Nile River provided a source of fresh water, as well as a means of transportation throughout Egypt that allowed materials for the pyramids to be transported from the queries to the building site with ease. Without a means of transportation like this, moving large rocks would have been very difficult.
Of the three theories on how the Great Pyramid was built, in descending order of acceptability, the most suitable theory is Clifford Wilson’s followed by Joseph Davidovits’ and Erich Von Däniken’s argument. Clifford Wilson’s theory is the best because he illustrates how the pyramids were built and provides the evidence to prove his theory, however; this is unlike Joseph Davidovits’ theory because Davidovits does not fully answer questions that arise concerning his theory. The three theories have similar points, but contain very different ideas on the construction of the Great Pyramid. This is obvious in Clifford Wilson’s argument where he is repeatedly disproving Von Däniken’s theory that the “gods” created the pyramids, whereas in Davidovits theory the pyramids were simply casted by means of chemically mixing Natron, aluminum and silicon to produce artificial rock. These three individuals express different ideas on the building of the building of the Great Pyramid.
Mass media, pseudoscience documentaries and the world of Hollywood have caused a great deal of confusion among people when it comes the origins of the Great Pyramids of Giza. When really learning about the ancient Egyptians, it is not unfathomable to comprehend that they were the real masters of the sophisticated architectural legacy they left behind. Long before the construction of the pyramids, the Egyptians already had a thoroughly developed society with agriculture, religion, a writing system, mathematics, innovative artwork and monumental stone architecture. They were a true civilization with genius architects and master builders who had building and quartering skills that were ahead of their time. To question the architectural integrity
In the third dynasty the egyptians gained more power and wealth. They wanted a way to show off their great power and wealth, so they built pyramids, pyramids were huge pointed stone structures. Pyramids contained rooms full of treasure and secret passageways. The first pyramid was the Step Pyramid at Saqqara, built for King Zoser around 2750 B.C. “The step pyramid was the only one of its kind, it was an amazing improvement from the mastaba.” ( pg 49)
In the ancient world there once stood seven wonders, seven monuments of the ingenuity of men. The civilizations fell, and those wonders crumbled to dust, lost in the sands of time all except one: The Great Pyramid of Giza. It is spawned countless myths, but its real story is about triumph over impossible odds, extraordinary human ingenuity and one man’s burning ambition to live forever. It is 4.500 years old, the only ancient wonder of the world still standing and it is the oldest. Yet how much do we know about it?
In the beginning of this chapter it discusses how the pyramids were built, what purpose they served, the three pyramids at Giza, some messages found on the stones that were used to build pyramids, and what a mastabas is. Pyramids are tombs built for Egypt's pharaohs. Pyramids are large structures with four sides that are the shape of a triangle, that meet at the top to form a point. The ancient Egyptians used the pyramids as tombs for the pharaohs and temples for their gods. The pyramids have one or two little temples attached to them, which holds their relatives and servants.
There have been attempts to prove or provide the knowledge that aliens built the pyramids. However, recent research supports the theory that the Pyramids were built by the Egyptians and also refute the possibility that the aliens built the Pyramids. The pyramids of Egypt are fascinating, however, they remain to be a mystery. The well-built architecture is located in Giza, Egypt, on the west bank of the Nile River is the only survivor out of all seven ancient wonders. The pyramid still amazes thousands of scientists and guest's each year. It is also one of the most important aspect of the Egyptian culture that Egyptians are proud of. In this paper, I am going to address three arguments in support the theory that says the pyramids were built
The Great Pyramid of Giza is one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Although it is the oldest and most studied structure, it still is the most mysterious. The Great Pyramid of Giza is the largest and oldest of the three significant pyramids of Giza plateau that was a “funerary structure.” The everlasting monument was to honor Egypt’s Fourth Dynasty pharaoh, Khufu (known as Cheops to the Greeks). Khufu was the son of King Sneferu, who happened to be a great pyramid builder, and Hetepheres I. Khufu reigned for approximately 24 years. The people believed that Khufu was a more ruthless and cruel dictator. The Great Pyramid of Giza was a representation of Khufu’s leading and coordination of his people. Because of Khufu’s memorial,

5 million tons of stone, stacked 438 feet high, some 4,500 years ago, the Great Pyramid is the tallest and the largest of the Egyptian pyramids
Joseph Davidovits, a French chemist, has proposed that the pyramids were formed using a special concrete mixture, and then poured into wooden moulds where it hardened (Alt. theory #3).While Davidovits claims to have explained aspects of pyramid construction which the heave-ho theory could not, the mould theory has many faults, rendering it weak and improbable. Firstly, the stones used in building the pyramids were of diverse shapes (Article 5). The shape of the stones would be uniform if they were created in moulds of exact dimensions. If each stone was created in a uniquely fashioned mould, it would account for the diversity in shape. However, building thousands, or even hundreds, of moulds would have been e...
