Literature varies in many ways. Two ways in which this can happen can be between escape literature and interpretive literature. According to Literature Structure, Sound, and Sense, “Literature of escape is that written purely for entertainment… Literature of interpretive is written to broaden, deepen, and sharpen our awareness of life.” In the novel Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, interpretive literature is more evident than escape in regard to the fact that it was written not only for pleasure, but for a deeper understanding that the reader may grasp. He expects his happiness to begin, but this is not the case. His new found wealth proves to be more harmful than beneficial as it wrecks his self-confidence and takes away a lot of his happiness. This part of the story gives the reader a deeper view on life and the destructive qualities money can possess. In this sequence of the story, it is not escape because it does possess a quality deeper than just making the reader go into another reality. Instead it can give wisdom and understanding if the reader accepts and listens to the “advice” given. Often in Great Expectations, social class level and its effects on a person are widely explored. Dickens gives the book its main theme through this tactic. He shows that even though being rich and being high in the “social ladder” can be beneficial, having true friends is the real way to win in life. Pip urges himself this entire novel to become an overall better person and it is not until the end that he realizes the true meaning of happiness and prosperity. The settings of Great Expectations are Pip’s homes, one home that he lives in during his childhood in Kent, England, and the other that he lives in when he is grown in London, England. Social status was a big deal in the mid-nineteenth century. The rich were highly respected and liked by all, and the poor were treated unkindly and were sometimes made fun of. The rich could have any job that they liked, but the poor would almost always take over the job that their father had. The narrator of Great Expectations is Pip. If the novel were narrated from any other point of view, it would not have the same effect as it does now.

Living in a world where much about a person’s character is measured by wealth, it has become increasingly important to maintain a separation between material characteristics and intangible moral values. Pip, in Dickens’ Great Expectations, must learn from his series of disappointments and realize the importance of self-reliance over acceptance to social norms. Through his unwavering faith in wealthy “ideals,” such as Miss Havisham and Estella, Pip develops both emotionally and morally, learning that surface appearances never reveal the truth in a person’s heart.
Charles Dickens’ aptly titled novel Great Expectations focuses on the journey of the stories chief protagonist, Pip, to fulfill the expectations of his life that have been set for him by external forces. The fusing of the seemingly unattainable aspects of high society and upper class, coupled with Pip’s insatiable desire to reach such status, drives him to realize these expectations that have been prescribed for him. The encompassing desire that he feels stems from his experiences with Mrs. Havisham and the unbridled passion that he feels for Estella. Pip realizes that due to the society-imposed caste system that he is trapped in, he will never be able to acquire Estella’s love working as a lowly blacksmith at the forge. The gloomy realizations that Pip is undergoing cause him to categorically despise everything about himself, feeling ashamed for the life he is living when illuminated by the throngs of the upper class.

Nature and instinct of mankind harvests a constant craving, lust, and ambitious drive for self-improvement. The struggles of life to have one’s voice heard, make a difference, be loved and remembered, strives individuals to leave an eternal mark on mankind’s earth dwelling timeline. These motives keep us moving forward day by day. In the novel Great Expectations, Charles Dickens tells the tale of a glaringly ambitious orphan child “raised by hand” (5) elbowing his way up the social class ladder during the Victorian Era. The vicissitudes and unexpected events in his life, stand no chance against the instinctively driven and sustained determination that overpowers him. He is highly motivated and bluntly refuses to settle for anything other than the best. Pip is continuously challenged with a burning desire on his mind to outdo his own self and heighten his educational, social and, moral standards.
At the start of the novel, Pip is a poor uneducated orphan boy unaware of social classes, or even the existence of such things. As a result, he is content with what he has and who he knows. Moving on in life, he comes across new people from all spectrums of social classes, and his content turns to shame and greed, as he longs to be “better”. All of a sudden Pip becomes ashamed of both his family and his social class. As Pip begins to understand the true meaning of life, his childish attitude does however change. “Pip learns as he grows older, however, that having money and power and being of a higher social class is not necessarily better than having true friends that care about him - even if they are of a lower social class” (Bloom, “Charles Dickens’s Great Expectations” 236). ... message that speaks as a voice of social reform. Dickens’ is trying to say that one should not worship money, as it can completely change a person, and in this case, for the worst. Readers feel that money and power do corrupt, and that social distinction is something that should not occur, even though it does. Even in the singular case of Pip, one can see just how obsessed people become with social class, instead of focusing on the things that really count, such as the people one loves. As Linda K. Hughes of the New York Times once said, “…Victorians were almost obsessed with becoming better people (social class)... This story truly captures that age,” which strengthens my point that Dickens’ was trying to portray this obsession in a negative way. The series of events that occur within the book parallel the real world and are indicative of true human nature.
Most importantly, the entire movie is just one story of how a simple country boy is turned into a snob by the city life. Moreover, Pip doesn't gain anything when he goes to live in the city and actually is less happy than his early days. In this, Dickens is trying to convey the sense that being wealthy and aristocratic is not as important as having loyalty, love, humble dignity, and inner worth.
Charles Dickens utilizes his life for inspiration for the protagonist Pip in his novel Great Expectations. They both struggle with their social standing. Dickens loved plays and theatre and therefore incorporated them into Pip’s life. Dickens died happy in the middle class and Pip died happy in the middle class. The connection Dickens makes with his life to Pip’s life is undeniable. If readers understand Dickens and his upbringing then readers can understand how and why he created Pip’s upbringing. Charles Dickens’ life, full of highs and lows, mirrors that of Pip’s life. Their lives began the same and ended the same. To understand the difficulty of Dickens’ childhood is to understand why his writing focuses on the English social structure. Dickens’ life revolved around social standing. He was born in the lower class but wasn’t miserable. After his father fell into tremendous debt he was forced into work at a young age. He had to work his way to a higher social standing. Because of Dicken’s constant fighting of class the English social structure is buried beneath the surface in nearly all of his writings. In Great Expectations Pip’s life mirrors Dickens’ in the start of low class and the rise to a comfortable life. Fortunately for Dickens, he does not fall again as Pip does. However, Pip and Dickens both end up in a stable social standing.

Social class played a major role in the society depicted in Charles Dickens's Great Expectations. Social class determined the manner in which a person was treated and their access to education. Yet, social class did not define the character of the individual.
During the nineteenth century, British society was dominated and ruled by a tightly woven system of class distinctions. Social relations and acceptance were based upon position. Charles Dickens utilizes Great Expectations as a commentary on the system of class and each person's place within it. In the character of Pip, Dickens demonstrates the working class' obsession to overthrow their limitations and re-invent new lives. Dickens also uses Pip and various other characters to show that escape from one's origins is never possible, and attempting to do so only creates confusion and suffering. Ultimately Dickens shows that trying to overthrow one's social rank is never possible; only through acceptance of one's position is any semblance of gentility possible.
