Introduction
Referring to smoking, different countries have different attitudes towards the habit. Some countries have strong negative altitude against smoking while others do not. In both America and United Kingdom, smokers are seen as social pariahs while in Hong Kong, the altitude towards smokers is not strict (Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders, 2013). However, the only one similar attitude between all the three countries is that they all disapprove smoking. This paper will explore the statement "Smokers in Great Britain and the United States are increasingly treated as social pariahs". Comment on this point of view, compare and contrast the attitude to smoking in both of these countries with attitudes in China Hong Kong.
In as much as America, Britain, and China a lot of tax received from tobacco manufacturing companies, it shows that these countries still define that smoking is a bad habit. However, their attitude towards the practice is totally different. From statement ‘Smokers in Great Britain and the United States are increasingly treated as social pariahs’, this means that smokers are seen as outcast. In other words, smoking is not only discouraged but also assumed to be a negative habit. Being the most powerful countries in the world, both the America and Britain have a raised voice against smoking when compared to other countries. Conversely, this does not necessarily mean that other countries’ supports or by any means advocate for smoking. The statement does not neither mean that other nations are lenient to the habit of smoking (Mueller and Frith, 2010).

The smoking issue is very complicated and some of the arguments are beyond the scope of this essay. Still, we can obtain a balanced outlook if we consider the following: the facts of smoking, individual right, societal responsibility, and the stigma of smoking. Haviland and King write essays which contain very important points, but seem to contain a bias which may alienate some people. To truly reach a consensus on the smoking issue, we must be willing to meet each other halfway. We must strike equilibrium between individual right and societal responsibility.

Smoking cigarettes is a detrimental practice not only to the smoker, but also to everyone around the smoker. According to an article from the American Lung Association, “Health Effects” (n.d.), “Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S., causing over 438,000 deaths per year”. The umbrella term for tobacco use includes the use of cigarettes, cigars, e-cigs and chewing tobacco. While tobacco causes adverse health consequences, it also has been a unifying factor for change in public health. While the tobacco industries targets specific populations, public health specifically targets smokers, possible smokers, and the public to influence cessation, policies and education.
Sut Jhally, a professor at the university of Massachusetts of whom won the distinguished teacher award, wrote in his essay “ Advertising at the Edge of the Apocalypse” that : 20th century advertising - the most powerful propaganda in human history - will destroy the world as we know it. The survival of the human race will depend upon our ability to minimize the harmful effects of Advertising. These effects will have lasting impacts on our culture, joy, and future.
There is little to no mention of any statistics that might show when, and thereby, why, cigarette smoking gained popularity. The author also fails to provide cultural context in many areas. Alleged masculine values in America are presented as fact, when there is no evidence, aside from the author’s word, that this is true. The arguments would be much stronger had the author successfully differentiated between correlation and causation. At times, the article is unbalanced, such as the argument surrounding post-World War Two advertising. Within the article, it is unproven that there was a spike in cigarette smoking in men. It was also unproven that the advertisements had an effect. The article ignores the possibility that the increase in smoking among men was merely a consequence of reaching a few opinion leaders. As cigarettes are such an addictive product, simple curiosity in the privacy of one’s home may have turned some men into smokers.
Each year 440,000 people die, in the United States alone, from the effects of cigarette smoking (American Cancer Society, 2004). As discussed by Scheraga & Calfee (1996) as early as the 1950’s the U.S. government has utilized several methods to curb the incidence of smoking, from fear advertising to published health warnings. Kao & Tremblay (1988) and Tremblay & Tremblay (1995) agreed that these early interventions by the U.S. government were instrumental in the diminution of the national demand for cigarettes in the United States. In more recent years, state governments have joined in the battle against smoking by introducing antismoking regulations.

Cigarette business has now sprung from a small shop to a very large corperation. Cigarette businesses are not just a business now, it is considered to be a money machine. It is a huge industrial business around the world providing many jobs and creating massive revenue. So many people are put at risk to these businesses directly and indirectly. The owners and workers of the tobacco companies both take this as their source of primary income. They can easily support their family through this business if the businesses aren 't hoarding all revenue for themselves. Producing cigarettes has become one of the most profitable business, not to mention one of the biggest industries in the whole world. The government receives huge amounts of money from cigarette companies from the taxes they pay alone. Cigarette use is in the workplace of many people around the world. Though many people can be benefited through this business it is not worth what comes from cigarette use. The government is getting huge sums of money from the sale and distribution of cigarettes. So, making the same and manufacturing of cigarettes illegal will definitely hurt the government and add pressures to many people who are in need of a job or looking for one. As a result, through this business, it creates a source of income for the workers and owners of companies big and small. But some people may argue that the physical health risks from smoking, financial as well as social risks occur along with this. A person, who smokes on a regular basis also may spend a majority of his money on buying cigarette or other tobacco products. The average pack of cigarettes costs the consumer four dollars per pack. The Effects of Advertising and Media on Society Advertising is an important social phenomenon. It stimulates consumption and increases energy consumption. economic activity models, life-styles and value orientation. Consumers confronted with extensive daily doses of advertising in multiple media. With the continual attack of marketing media, it is presumable that it will affect our individualism and society as a whole.

Cigarette smoking has been identified as the most important source of preventable morbidity and premature mortality worldwide. Smoking-related diseases claim an estimated 440,000 American lives each year, including those affected indirectly, such as babies born prematurely due to prenatal maternal smoking and victims of "secondhand" exposure to tobacco's carcinogens. Smoking costs the United States over $150 billion each year in health-care costs including $81.9 billion in mortality-related productivity loses and $75.5 billion in excess medical expenditures.

Advertising is master in manipulate reality and fantasy, by creating “magic show.” It is true that advertising has been a powerful mechanism that distorts our whole society’s values and priorities. On the other hand, advertising educate people about several issues. In political terms, it moves mass of people and persuade them to vote for a candidate. And, of course, in terms of economy, contributes in the development through the consumption of the costumer.
