The Polish Poster Movement
The Polish poster movement is pretty downplayed in art and graphic design history, but this is not a reflection on its importance. Characterized by stylistic variation and the integration of image and text, poster art played a major role in Polish graphic design, and an even greater role to graphic design and illustration as a whole. Especially in contemporary design, we have seen a sort of reemergence with the aesthetic qualities of Polish poster art.
The history of Poland in the 20th century plays a large role in the genesis of these posters. For a long time the country of Poland has been through many successions of being under the captivity of other countries. For more than a century Poland has struggled for its independence. Pre WWII, the country lived independently and prospered for 20 years. Then Nazi Germany invaded and the war began. This cultural depression was only cut deeper when Soviet Russia occupied half of Poland, and following that came eighteen months of civilian murders and imprisonments to Soviet concentration camps. During these times, the poster was immensely held to high-regard by authorities, who used its flexibility as a medium for propaganda. They were simple and to-the-point; this was no time for any kind of avant-gardism. In addition to this, building sites throughout the country were surrounded by wooden fences, which soon enough became more reminiscent of an outdoor museum because of all the posters that would inevitably cover it. As a result of seeing how effective posters were found to be, soon advertising in Poland expanded to using poster design as well.
