My Family And My Grandmother

864 Words2 Pages

Initially, I was going to interview my great-grandmother, Pearl Scruggs for this assignment but I decided to go ahead and interview my mothers mother instead because I’m closest to her and I figured that it would be really interesting to learn more about her life. My grandmother grew up in Cleveland, Ohio with my late great grandmother, Nana, and seven of her other siblings. I believe that having that foundation as a child made her very family oriented. Loved ones are the most important things to her, she’s the type of person to put everyone before herelf. My grandmother was married twice, her and my grandfather divorced and she married again, then her second husband passed away. I know that sometimes she feels lonely, but she also feels healthy and happy. She still admires her independence and she’s a huge believer in family and laughter. When I asked my grandmother what were three things that she feared she replied “my family not loving me, my family not caring about me, and my family not understanding me, nothing else matters”. All my life she’s given me nothing but love, care, confidence and respect. What she enjoys to do the most is traveling, going to church, and sewing clothes. My grandmother is still a resident of Cleveland, OH, and I couldn’t be more thankful for her. The life course principles that were incorporated into my interview questions were principles 1, 3, and 5. Principle number one is the meaningful pattern seen in the passing of time and includes all phases of life. Principle three explores the individuals own developmental life courses that were shaped by historical events. Last but not least, principle 5, where the lives of all family members are interdependent because of one historical event that can a... ... middle of paper ... ...it was meaningful to me because I was able to learn so much about someone I care about dearly. It taught me a lot about her and it also reminded it me why she was my role model to begin with. Early on in my life my grandmother helped a lot out with raising me so I feel that she’s rubbed off on me a lot, and once I’m older I’ll hopefully grow into a great lover like she is. From this experience I’ve learned that a lot has changed in society, and that I wish I were able to live in her time to be able to experience a generation with more care for the world and greater morals for themselves. I have very positive thoughts about this experience, it made me want to interview a lot more than just my grandmother; I would love to learn about other elders in my life. Once again, I’m very grateful that this class gave me a project to do that is very meaningful to my life and me.
