This semester I had the opportunity to partake in two different service experiences that spanned over the length of the semester. The first was with my Fraternity, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. and the Boys Scout troop that we sponsor called Troop 1911. The second is a partnership with the YLC New Orleans that I personally took part in putting together. The community service outreach with both have been extremely rewarding because in both instances I am granted the opportunity to mentor and work with kids. If I had to choose which I feel is the most memorable it would be the Saturdays that I have spent volunteering with the YLC. The reasoning behind my decision is the fact that I spent more time with this group of children allowing me to foster a bond with them. As a volunteer with the YLC me and a couple of my fraternity brother go out on Saturday morning and volunteer during the RECreate program that YLC has. My fraternity brother Patrick Jackson whom graduated first approached me about volunteering with YLC from Xavier University a couple years ago. He is a project leader for RECreate and wanted some of us to come out to volunteer and mentor, he said the kids in the program really didn’t have many positive male role models in their life so we could help fill that void. The group meets every Saturday in the old Magnolia projects, which is now called Harmony Oaks Community Center. The children that attend RECreate all come from that area and range from the age five years old to fourteen years of age. There are 10 programs in the spring and through these programs children are present with educational, cultural and recreational activities. They also provide breakfast and lunch for the children. Each volunteer is asked to do be ...

...rds. What I mean by this is that through police power it felt as if people in these areas are not truly free because the way they treated. The stop and frisk law in New York is a perfect example of what I mean by this. Just because law enforcement feels that a certain individual looks suspicious they are subjected to being stopped and searched. This tends to only happen to people in low socioeconomic communities though. Through events like this trust will be fostered between law enforcement and the community so that these officers aren’t so fearful and suspicious of the people they are supposed to serve. I believe that trust is the only way that we can truly rid ourselves of some of these illegal activities that are occurring on both sides. When we are able to usher trust and love into society that is when we will truly be able to slightly understand God’s message.

Graduation Speech

- Ladies, gentlemen, parents, friends, family, staff, fellow students: Instead of taking up more time and reading my speech, it is available to you at http://www.olen’s_speech.com. Thank you. No, just kidding. But seriously folks... Today we are gathered here to celebrate our graduation from 12 long years of schooling. The education granted to us has been a privilege. One so graciously given to us by the citizens of our state, by our community, and by our parents. Today would not be possible without them....   [tags: Graduation Speech, Commencement Address]

- For some of you graduates, this will be the last ceremony you might ever sit through. Most of us, though, and I regret that I am in this group, will sit through many more ceremonies -- ceremonies longer and more tedious that this or anything else you can imagine. If you think this is bad, try a college graduation. Think, that is, attend a wedding. And, if just for a moment you think that that is bad, just be thankful you have never attended or will attend a Bar Mitzvah. The only ceremony I think anybody would truly enjoy attending is a funeral....   [tags: Graduation Speech, Commencement Address]

- As you inhale the aggregate odor of your senior class for the last time, I’m sure there are many burning questions racing through your minds: “Will I find my place in the world?” If you’re lucky. “Am I really going to graduate a virgin?” Yeah, probably. “Who is that incredibly handsome young man addressing us, and how long do we have the privilege of listening to him?” Howdy, Andrew Gonzales here, and hopefully not long; I realize that your robes are making you sweat, your thongs are making you uncomfortable, and my use of the words “virgin” and “thongs” is making your parents sweaty and uncomfortable....   [tags: Graduation Speech, Commencement Address]

- To the County High School Class of 2012: As you sit in front of me, I know what most of you are thinking at the moment. There are those who are already pondering about what life without high school will be like; those who are debating whether or not to tell your crush tonight about your whispers of adoration you’ve secretly held for four years; some simply want to get out of that ungodly chair, get that thing that isn’t really a diploma but only tells you when to pick up the thing, and then be the first one on the green bus to the grad party — you know who you are....   [tags: Graduation Speech, Commencement Address]

- Good evening parents, teachers, honored guests and soon to be graduates. My name is Ed Burrower, I'm the senior class president. A few weeks ago, I was told that I would be speaking at graduation. I was asked to put together a speech for tonight -- I've become experienced at speech writing over the past couple of weeks. The speech that you are hearing is the fourth one I've written, the recycle bin needs to be emptied at home and I need a new highlighter. Thank you, Mr. Mier, you get an "A+" for your help as my speech teacher but an "F" for saving trees....   [tags: Graduation Speech, Commencement Address]

- It is probably a mistake that I am standing here giving a speech for graduation. In fact it is probably a mistake that I am even graduating from this school at all -- believe me, just as most people in this class I have tested the limits of attendance, of sleeplessness, and of procrastination. At the beginning of my high schooling, I was even testing dropping out ... and if that wasn't a mistake, I don't know what was. After four years of Starr altering our minds, it seemed most fitting for me to spend my four minutes talking about mistakes....   [tags: Graduation Speech, Commencement Address]

- Students, faculty, family, friends, on this exciting day, I speak to optimism, laughter, and grins. As I was gathering input for this graduation speech, several people suggested including a profound quote offering “encouraging advice to the young graduates”, and then there were others who said, “eh don’t worry about it, no one listens to those anyway.” Fortunately, I was actually able to take from both suggestions and found a happy balance. You see, I won’t tell you today to: “Dare to dream” or “Find your own vision” or even to “Strive for excellence,” or any trite cliché that’s ever been said in a graduation speech....   [tags: Graduation Speech, Commencement Address]

- As graduation has approached, I have contemplated my life's direction and the elements of my past that have combined to place me here, in this moment, as I'm certain we all have. What has inspired us. Do we have regrets. What are we going to do with the rest of our lives. Most importantly, are we truly happy. Frankly, I'm ecstatic. How about you. But what has made me happy in the past. Well, Baskin Robbins, Old Navy, and Survivor to name a few things...But on a more meaningful note, my life has been enriched by compassion....   [tags: Graduation Speech, Commencement Address]

- I would like to thank all of you for coming on such short notice. After all, 18 years hardly seems like enough time to prepare for graduation. In fact, as I stand up here and looking at all of my classmates, I wonder if I am ready to graduate. But I know that high school has merely been an appetizer in the seven course meal that we call life. And for all of you that know me -- family, friends and teachers -- you know that I have a great appreciation for food.
