Freshman year is always talked about as one of the most important years of school because that’s when grades start to actually matter. Grades become set in the stone like pyramid hieroglyphics compared to our old grades that washed away like coarse sand castles on the beach. The grades you receive that first semester will be part of your GPA the rest of your high school education. Not only do the grades start counting, but some students find it difficult adjusting to high school level classes. For me, freshmen English was the year my writing had to make drastic changes. From Kindergarten to Eighth grade my writing could be described as impressively average. My writing had always met expectations, never exceeding them. I would turn in my assignments and in return receive my B. I wrote all of my papers the night before whether it was a paragraph response or the five-page final. My first English assignment was a wake up call to say the least.
For freshmen English, you were either assigned to the hell-hole that is Ms. Veigel 's room 111 or you were lucky and you were across the hall in la la land with Mr. Maybon. Knowing my luck, I ended up with Ms. Veigel. I felt like I was the one drafted to go to war while my friends stayed stateside with Mr. Maybon. Ms. Veigel had a reputation of being one of the strictest teachers at my school. If the projector was aimed at the perfect angle, you could almost see devil horns protruding from her curly red hair. I was ecstatic when I heard her state “You’ll be writing poems as your first assignment” I could not believe the first grade going into the Gradebook would be one of the simplest English assignments you can receive. I waited until the final due date and started slamming my keyboard to cr...

...out. Sometimes you try your best and your best is not good enough. I am not going to be judged on my non-emotional poetry and receive a substandard grade for the amount of work I put it. I didn’t do a single Accelerated or AP English class the rest of high school. Why would I work hard for a B when I can receive an A in regular English. The rest of high school my writing stayed at exactly the same level where it was during the 9th grade.
I now loathe writing with a burning passion. Everyone has had despicable teachers, but few people have had teachers that end up demolishing your desire to improve in a subject. Now I’m in college and my writing is still rough like cracked asphalt. I may not want to improve, but college expects a certain standard. I need to reach that standard so I will begin my journey to improve once again. Hopefully this time with better results.

Graduation Speech On Freshman Year English

- Freshman year English was the biggest wake up call for me thus far in my college career. Never did I expect that this class would be my most challenging course, making my Chemistry 1307 class a walk in the park. When coming into this class I remember on the first day each student was required to state fun facts about ourselves. One thing I heard many times from multiple students was “This is my second time taking this class” or “This is my third time being enrolled in English 1307”. Hearing those statements really made me anxious about the course and what was going to be in store for me, and made me wonder if I would be able to pull through and pass....   [tags: Writing, High school, Paper, Essay]

- JagVenture Leaders Introduction At the beginning of my freshman year, I was able to participate in a first year program called JagVenture. This program was filled with team building exercises, inspirational speakers, and meeting a ton of new people. I enjoyed it so much that I applied to be a student leader this past semester. Being a JagVenture student leader was one of the best experiences I have went through in my college career. - Someone very special in my life once told me, "Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off of your goals." Upon entering high school four years ago, the majority of us had one goal and only one goal in mind, graduation. Many of us have heard people say that high school is the best time of our lives, so we better enjoy it. With that in mind, we thought that the next four years were going to be a breeze and before we knew it we would be out of here. Well, that is when reality hit us ......   [tags: Graduation Speech, Commencement Address]

- High school. I never realized it would bring so many changes. As I walked on to campus my freshman year, my mindset was the same as it was in eighth grade; the young are invincible. And although I was excited to come to high school I had many fears. Would the classes be too hard, would I make new friends, what could I become involved in, and most of all -- what if I get lost. All of these fears eventually subsided and I, along with all of you, found the right classes and the right teachers. We all made new friends....   [tags: Graduation Speech, Commencement Address]

- Good evening and welcome to the commencement ceremonies of the class of 2006. It has been a long journey, somewhere around 18 years, but we've finally reached the piece de resistance of our high school years. I'm not very good at this sentimental thing, so I scratched up a little poem. Ladies and Gentleman, may I present to you, "Ode to the Class of '06." ODE TO THE CLASS OF 2012 'Twas the night of graduation, and under the steeple there were very, very emotional people. Thoughts of the future, thoughts of the past, memories which will always last....   [tags: Graduation Speech, Commencement Address]

- The Class of 2012. How long have we heard these words applied to us. Long years starting with broken crayons in kindergarten to inside-out sweatshirts in middle school to late English essays — 13 years of learning from the simplest counting to complicated algebra and calculus, from reciting our ABCs to reading Shakespeare. Imagine, us coming out of our respective middle schools into this monster of a campus. With three times as many people — people who drive. People who have cars and are legal adults....   [tags: Graduation Speech, Commencement Address]

- Good evening. A couple weeks ago, I was attempting to clean my room when I unearthed an old yearbook from my days in middle school. Rather absentmindedly I opened the book to browse through it. However, before long I became immersed in the memories brought back to life and quickly lost track of time. Over an hour later, I set the book aside and marveled at how much had changed since then. Not only had people changed physically, but they had also changed their friends, habits and behaviors. Furthermore, we have all grown as a result of the changing world around us, a changing world that has witnessed the tragedy of Sept....   [tags: Graduation Speech, Commencement Address]
