College students come to college expecting to have more freedom than they usually do at home just because they are living on their own. I am currently attending Richard Bland College and it has taught me to be more independent because I usually go to my parents for money or anything else that they can provide for me back at home. Last semester I struggled to make payments for school. The problem I had was with the credit card company. The school would take the money out of my account and I would be responsible to pay the bill every month. With the little money I would sometimes fall behind on my payments and since I didn’t want to take from my parents, I had to take money that I had saved up all summer out of my savings and use it to make my payments. That only covered for classes and the dorms. I still needed money for extra things such as food, so I would have to go home every weekend and work just to make enough money so that I could eat and stay healthy. I had decided to do a payment plan with the school because of my struggle, which will make it easier for me to make payments on time. I found out about this plan as I was coming back to the dorms here at Richard Bland. I had received a call from Maze Hall that said I needed to pay the school. ... was Monday, test time. I was a bit nervous because I had studied but I didn’t know if I was prepared enough to get an A on this test. Throughout the whole test I kept looking at the questions and saying “A… C… D…” and so on. I knew the answers to all of the questions of the test. Well that day my best did work at the end of the semester when I passed the class with an A. Unfortunately I did not get a 3.8 GPA, but instead I ended up with a 3.5 GPA, which was still good.
I thought when I left home and came to college I would be the same person that I was before and depend on my parents for a lot of things. In my first semester of college, college had taught me to be more independent, to use my time wisely, and work hard for what I wanted to achieve. These are the basics that my parents had taught me throughout the years, but I’ve never put them to use until college.
