Eight years ago as I was preparing for my middle school graduation, I remember my homeroom teacher presenting each student with a parting gift. It was an envelope and inside of this envelope was a strip of paper containing notable characteristics of the respective student. When I opened mine, it read “—thoughtful and extremely perceptive of others and her environment. She is intelligent and has varied interests and opinions that hardly anyone knows about. She is an excellent student and a loyal friend.” Though I did not consider the significant meaning of these words at the time, when the paper resurfaced a few years later, I read the paper again, this time with deeper reflection. To this day, I am amazed by how accurate my teacher was in describing …show more content…
In addition, I am interested in helping disadvantaged and troubled youth. Being in college has allowed me to view the criminal justice system with a new perspective. I believe that the rehabilitation of adult and juvenile offenders is a key way to reduce recidivism. I also believe that early intervention is essential and that attention should be given to at-risk youth. In fulfilling various community service projects and internships, I have directly and indirectly been exposed to youth affected by the criminal justice …show more content…
While there, I helped two University of Maryland professors, Dr. Richardson and Dr. St. Vil with their research study titled “The Intersections of HIV Risk Behavior and Violent Victimization among Black Males”. Essentially, this study examined the risk factors for repeat violent injury and the HIV-risk behaviors of young Black men. Another intern and I were the only ones assigned to working on this project with the professors. We transcribed and coded ethnographic qualitative interviews of the victims. Through coding, we demonstrated qualitative analysis and inter-rater reliability by discussing what themes were present in all of the interviews. We found that all of the interviewees demonstrated symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder; they all had experiences with violence and experiences with the criminal justice system that began when they were juveniles; most had used drugs including, but not limited to marijuana, alcohol, synthetic marijuana, ecstasy, and heroin; most perpetuated the “Code of the Street” mentality and hypermasculine ideals; and many had poor relationships with their family and/or poor childhood experiences. Assisting in this study was definitely a proud research achievement and tied into my interest of discovering what issues propel a person to become engaged in crime. After I graduate, my goal is to attend graduate school and obtain my PhD in criminology or psychology
During one of our class sessions we discussed the different areas within the criminal justice system. The topic of courts and sentencing specifically of juveniles was mentioned. As we get to know the inside students we learn some of their backstory of how they ended up at Joseph Harp Correctional Facility, many of them had their first contact with the criminal justice system as a juvenile. Several of the inside students expressed animosity toward the courts when it came to sentencing of juveniles. They thought that some of the ways juveniles are sentenced is too harsh.
The quest for knowledge and understanding drives individuals to explore the unknown and live out the thoughts that once consumed their minds. Experience and formed opinions are the end results of these journeys; assumptions are either reinforced or shattered, but either way the truth is a little bit closer than before. Dark and gray areas consume the field of criminal justice; only personal experience can serve as a light. Participating in the internship program offered through the College of Criminal Justice at Sam Houston State University has become that light. Throughout this semester the knowledge acquired from SHSU criminal justice classes combined with the experiences gained from the Dallas County Adult Probation Department has produced an exceptional understanding of fact and theory pertaining to the field of criminal justice. Courses such as Criminology 262 and the Fundamentals of Criminal Law 264 contributed to the personal triumph gained from involvement in the internship program and allowed individual strengths and weaknesses to ...
My first exposure to the criminal justice system was while in high school when I was fortunate to be chosen for an internship with a District Judge John Vance in Dallas, Texas. Judge Vance made certain I had a rich and varied experience. He had me to sit in on several high profile cases in his court and to participate in preparing cases for trial with a prosecutor and defense attorney. In addition, he encouraged me to visit other courtrooms and courthouses to observe the proceedings. This along with him coordinating visits at local jails and law enforcement agencies gave me a broad and well-rounded perspective of the criminal justice system. I recall fondly, sitting in on closing arguments at the federal courthouse; the prosecutors practiced
The status of the criminal justice system in Europe during the 1700s was the product of long tradition of aristocracy. An aristocracy government is one in which land is owned by particular families and is passed down through the generations of a family line. The monarch of the region grants titles and powers to the privileged classes, who in return keep order within their land and swear loyalty to the monarch. Property and power in an aristocracy were the privileges of birth alone and being merit was simply irrelevant. Their lives circled around maintaining, while attempting to expand, their wealth and power. Historically, as a higher class among others, aristocrats were known to be negligent towards the poor. To where they were prone to appoint
Throughout the 19th century, the criminal justice system in America and beyond began to evolve into a structure that more closely resembles the institution today. Prior to this period the criminal justice system was composed of laws based on moral commandments, social precedents and arbitrary punishments. The reform movement of the 1800s brought new outlooks on criminal acts and launched new methods of punishment that humanized and rationalized the criminal justice system.
The outdated nature of the Nigerian criminal justice system has been a topic for deliberation in recent times. Rightly put, there is work to be done by the legislative arm of the Nigerian government as the present procedures for adjudication of laws are old and present a problem to judicial officers as there are loopholes which are frequently exploited, and its archaic nature makes it unfit for use in a modern society. The criminal justice system is defined as the collective institutions through which an offender passes until the accusation has been disposed of or the assessed punishment concluded. The system typically has three components: law enforcement which includes; police, sheriffs, marshals; the judicial process which includes the judges, prosecutors, defense lawyers; and corrections which includes the prison officials, probation officers and parole officers . By the above definition, it can be elicited that the criminal justice system is a necessary organ of a functioning society, and it is necessary that an organ of such invaluable importance be kept in good shape. An effective criminal justice system is fundamental to the maintenance of law and order this is because it addresses behavioral issues, but due to the outdated nature of the Nigerian criminal system, the pivotal functions of the organ which is conviction and acquittal have been hindered drastically and have become exceedingly rare.
Both the federal government and states have authority to prosecute for criminal behavior in the United States. Each has their own criminal statutes, court systems, prosecutors, and police agencies to help deter crime. These criminal statutes control how suspects are investigated charged and tried. The court system institutes rules and policies that consist of their own structures and procedures within each state. Prosecutors are the most powerful and influential representatives of the court system. Sometimes a case can begin in a lower court then work its way up to a higher court depending on the crime. The law enforcers are made up of small town police officials and go all the way up to large federal agencies.
The criminal justice system has come a long way in the United States. This system is a unique and diverse formation that leads to many years of historical study. As new case studies and circumstances come to light, the criminal justice system continues to grow and change. Criminal justice officials are facing different challenges more so than those that existed many years ago. As the criminal justice system has evolved, so has the way professionals are expected to handle themselves in the community. Scholars interested in a career in any criminal justice field need a good foundation and a basis of knowledge. Perspectives in Criminal Justice is one of the first courses a student will take. This paper focuses on the some

As we all know there are many challenges the criminal justice system faces. The system is not perfect. Everyday more and more problems arise. While more problems are arising there are also people out there trying to fix the current issues at hand. Many of the issues have been around for a while and will take years for the solutions to take place. Some challenges that they are facing do not currently have a solution. The criminal justice system works with a variety of other organizations, so coming up with one solution will have either a positive or negative affect one or many other organizations. The criminal justice system is a large and far-reaching segment of America's judicial and legislative branches. Attorneys and lawmakers have recognized some main areas of concern that demands attention, action and adjustment. They are all tasks that put unnecessary burdens on the criminal justice system, using time, money and extra work. Some of the issues are drugs in the community, youth violence, health and overpopulated prisons, violence against women, the death penalty, and many more. ...
I have always taken an interest in Criminal Justice and crime prevention ever since middle school and I set out to make my career goal to become a Criminal Justice professional. Thus, pursuing a Criminal Justice master’s degree has been a part of my plans for the future and will become one of my core focuses that I will set up in my graduate studies. It will also enable me to become a more competent working professional and encourage me to advance towards the doctoral program.
A major aspect of the liberal arts education is gaining knowledge from a variety of departments and experiences both in and out of the classroom. This semester I was given the opportunity to enroll in an Introduction to Criminal Justice course as the final part of my political science degree. While I have had the opportunity to take a criminal justice law course in the past, this is the first opportunity I have to take a class that explores and explains the justice system.
The answer is simple yet complex, organizational goals. The American criminal justice system could be viewed as a large organization. This organization has goals, or a mission, to provide a service to the public. The service the public generally expects from its tax-funded criminal justice system varies from sub-organizations within the major organization. But overall, the public generally expects the criminal justice system to respond to and prevent crime, while also dealing with criminals who have broken the laws of society. With these goals in mind, one can see the importance of collaborations between different departments, agencies, and other organizations that make up our criminal justice system.
With the advent and development of internet technology, gender harassment on the internet has become one of the biggest issues facing the modern society. It is very common to hear or read news and reports relating to gender abuse on the internet. In most cases, women have been the victims of this issue making it difficult to fight for gender equality in the society. The attacks might take place in the social media, phones, emails, and computer devices among others. Gender abuse through the cyberspace is a criminal activity just like the physical harassment. As such, it is expected that those who are found guilty of committing the crime be penalized by the court of law. However, the modern society has complicated the issue through secondary victimization of the already hurt victims. The laws and criminal justice systems victimize the victims instead of helping them to get the justice they deserve. This paper seeks to discuss the issues of cyber gender harassment and the secondary victimization of the victims by the criminal justice systems of various lands.
In Intro to Criminal Justice class, I had the opportunity to learn about the Criminal Justice System more thoroughly. I learned that there are three components that make up the Criminal Justice System such as the courts, law enforcement, and corrections. Each component has its own role in making sure the the Criminal Justice System is functioning properly. If one of these components are not efficient the Criminal Justice system will not be as strong as it could be.
