Something that I have never shared is that I did Academic Decathlon in High School. Speech was one of topics that I struggled with when I was involved in it for two years. Believe me when I say that my progress from then to now has come a long way. Right after giving my persuasive speech, I had a lot of negative thoughts that were floating in my head. I felt that there has been little process in all of this time that I have spent trying to learn to communicate more effectively. Worst of all perhaps, I felt powerless to do anything to change this. This was my most practiced speech and it did not feel that way.
A study was conducted in 2009 by psychologists Matthias Wieser, Paul Puali, Phillipp Reicherts, and Andreas Mühlberger who discovered that high anxiety speakers are “significantly more sensitive to the angry images than to happy or neutral one”. Reading this very line made me think deeply I respond to speeches. From looking at the film of my persuasive speech, I can look to specific moments to where I visibly notice my audience losing me. From watching these moments, I get flash backs of myself in the middle of my speech looking at certain lost faces in the audience. Noticing this, I stop myself for a second, and try keep giving my speech. I don’t think that I have ever tried to calibrate the way to I go about speaking to an audience. That isn’t because of lack of care, but more because of lack of awareness that comes with adrenaline pumping through my body.
Taking a step back to look at what I can do to improve with speech giving, I have to slow down. I have to learn to be comfortable with pauses. I have to make sure that I don’t overthink what I am saying. I have to make sure that I do not get caught up with little detail...

...nt in myself. The way that I think I can display confidence is by taking more effort to show my passion, as I find myself having plenty in terms of the things I find important. I also want to make sure that am considerate of my audience and that I am not merely talking at them. According to MentalGameCoach.com’s “Ten Top Tips For Writing A Memorable Speech”, I need to make sure that I am “audience-centered”. A lot of other resources mention this and this is what is most important about communication as a whole. No one ever said that public speaking had to be a painful process. Speaking in front of an audience can really be fun. It took me a speech about the history to Macintosh to learn that. While I don’t see myself volunteering myself to give speeches in front of huge audiences in the future, I do know that I am certainly on my way of becoming the next Steve Jobs.
