At the end of class, students clambered to speak to the teacher as they were rushed off due to time trying to see the discussion web, many asked to do the activity again and stated that they felt really smart answering those questions. The teacher assured them they would have more opportunities and that they did a great job getting through such difficult text. The text was a twelve page scholarly article that many college students read. The students had one night to complete the reading along with annotation (questions/comments about the text) and answering questions that went along with it. Many students complained about the length when they walked in but said that it was actually interesting despite this. Challenging “normal” procedures that reflect institutional low expectations, without a doubt the teacher has set high expectations for the students and they are able to rise to the occasion when pushed (Oakes et. Al 2013). The students even have a discussion on some of the difficult vocabulary they faced throughout the text. It is clear that the students have a close relationship with the teacher and feel comfortable asking questions and joking with the teacher. It seemed as if many of them did not want to leave the classroom at all despite the amount of homework she assigns. This proves that students, no matter their circumstance, want and need to be pushed academically.
What is important about this activity is that it is two fold. Each student should be given equal and fair opportunities to instruction that is engaging and rigorous. If we cannot provide these necessities for our students than the system is flawed and will continue a cycle of poverty and underfunded schools and thus undereducated students.
Education is about commitment. For teachers we must be committed to growing our students in whatever it takes to assure they are happy in their future. We must expose them to multiple perspectives; challenging assignments that make them question their world view all while creating a constructive and respectful learning environment. I am not saying that this is easy work. This is life work that takes years to perfect but can alter the futures of hundreds of students for the better.
