Most people would say that prom is one of the most anticipated events that seniors in high school look forward to. However, I never gave much thought about going to prom mostly due to the fact that I was really shy and unconfident. Still, my friends would constantly ask whether or not I was going to attend prom. I would always tell them “I don’t know” every time, but since it was my senior year, my friends pressured me with guilt, saying that I would regret not going to our final high school dance. After constant thinking and being jealous of all the prom proposals that were happening, I decided I would try to get out of my comfort zone and go to prom.
However, the challenge for me was to ask a girl to go with me. Prom was just a month away, so most of the girls at school were already asked out. I asked around my circle of friends to see if there was a girl that had not been asked yet. Luckily, one of my friends, Dennis, told me that no one asked this one girl to prom yet. Her name was Bomi. She was a smart, pretty, very active, and a silly girl with a calm, soothing smile. Even in senior year, we would only give the occasional “hello” greeting whenever we passed by each other in the halls. There was not many options left, and I did have a small crush on her when we first met. It was the notification from my friend that I decided to go forward and ask her to prom.
When school ended, I was in full game-plan mode. I drove to the local arts and crafts store to buy a poster board and markers and then to the grocery store to purchase a dozen red roses.
When I got home, I decided to finish my ...

...lings in my stomach while looking back at this event, and I feel like a complete peasant. To this day, I have not contacted Bomi since the message that broke my teenage heart. She has also been avoiding me from what I hear from friends who go to the same college as her. I guess we ended up going from small friends who rarely talk to even smaller friends that do not even talk anymore. On the bright side, from this whole event, I learned that no matter the obstacle, never back down and face it head on. While this event ended badly, I was able to gain confidence and overcome my shyness. Nothing will always go the way you want it to go, but that just means that the world is not perfect. This experience has taught me many things such as letting go, being grateful, and staying calm. Prom will forever be a moment I wish to forget, but I hope to laugh about in 10 years or so.
