I earned both my Bachelor’s of Arts in Liberal Education and my Master’s in Education-Urban Education at Langston University in Tulsa, OK; Langston is a Historically Black College with a commitment to an educational focus on diversity and underrepresented populations. While pursuing both degree programs I worked full time as a teaching assistant and, later, as a teacher in a high poverty school whilst taking my courses in the evenings, weekends and summers. During my Master’s program I was able to use my course work on topics like Jonathan Kozol’s The Shame of the Nation or Savage Inequalities directly from the college classroom to my own class of students.
I discovered my professional calling when I took a job as an early childhood parateacher in Tulsa’s Even Start Family Literacy program. The program was housed in Kendall-Whittier Elementary, the same school where I teach today. The program introduced me to early childhood education, English Language Learners and high poverty students and families at the same time. During my four years with the program I applied the research of Hart & Risley’s study of oral language inequities between children of varying socioeconomic backgrounds and Dickinson and Tabors’ Beginning Literacy with Language to my teaching of birth to five year old students and their families. While teaching in the Even Start program I attended Family Literacy conferences across the country, joining sessions by Betty Hart and Todd Risley, Harvard’s Dr. Patton Tabors and Dr. Diane Beals and her study of meal time conversations and young children’s exposure of rare words.

...a comprehensive transitions program for families with children preparing to enter school for the first time. As the classroom coordinator, I designed a half day curriculum that is focused on providing purposeful play while encouraging parents’ involvement in their child’s first school experience. I meet with the project’s parent population: low income families, primarily Hispanic and Spanish speaking, often with little formal schooling, to explain the benefits of pre-k for students and to guide parents into their role as primary supporter of their young child’s education. My curriculum is adopted by three other Tulsa sites as the support for this transition program has increased. My work strives to eliminate the stark jump from home to school for both parents and children, providing a bridge of support for a positive and collaborative entry into formal schooling.

- Most people can recall an unproductive teacher who they feel left them no profit of knowledge. At the same time, those people can also reminisce on a soulful teacher who advanced their abilities beyond belief. In hindsight, students recognize no two teachers educate with the same methods and ethics.
