Education
I earned both my Bachelor’s of Arts in Liberal Education and my Master’s in Education-Urban Education at Langston University in Tulsa, OK; Langston is a Historically Black College with a commitment to an educational focus on diversity and underrepresented populations. While pursuing both degree programs I worked full time as a teaching assistant and, later, as a teacher in a high poverty school whilst taking my courses in the evenings, weekends and summers. During my Master’s program I was able to use my course work on topics like Jonathan Kozol’s The Shame of the Nation or Savage Inequalities directly from the college classroom to my own class of students.
Teaching
I discovered my professional calling when I took a job as an early childhood parateacher in Tulsa’s Even Start Family Literacy program. The program was housed in Kendall-Whittier Elementary, the same school where I teach today. The program introduced me to early childhood education, English Language Learners and high poverty students and families at the same time. During my four years with the program I applied the research of Hart & Risley’s study of oral language inequities between children of varying socioeconomic backgrounds and Dickinson and Tabors’ Beginning Literacy with Language to my teaching of birth to five year old students and their families. While teaching in the Even Start program I attended Family Literacy conferences across the country, joining sessions by Betty Hart and Todd Risley, Harvard’s Dr. Patton Tabors and Dr. Diane Beals and her study of meal time conversations and young children’s exposure of rare words.
Specifically, it was with Dr. Beals influence and guidance that I developed my teaching philosophy founded on rich oral langua...

...a comprehensive transitions program for families with children preparing to enter school for the first time. As the classroom coordinator, I designed a half day curriculum that is focused on providing purposeful play while encouraging parents’ involvement in their child’s first school experience. I meet with the project’s parent population: low income families, primarily Hispanic and Spanish speaking, often with little formal schooling, to explain the benefits of pre-k for students and to guide parents into their role as primary supporter of their young child’s education. My curriculum is adopted by three other Tulsa sites as the support for this transition program has increased. My work strives to eliminate the stark jump from home to school for both parents and children, providing a bridge of support for a positive and collaborative entry into formal schooling.

- Most people can recall an unproductive teacher who they feel left them no profit of knowledge. At the same time, those people can also reminisce on a soulful teacher who advanced their abilities beyond belief. In hindsight, students recognize no two teachers educate with the same methods and ethics. Influenced by their dedication to helping their students, teachers utilize methods of teaching to accommodate their views of a beneficial education for their students. In other views, teachers have their own perspective of a valuable education and the components enrolled with that schooling....   [tags: Education, Teacher, School, Student]

- It is a commonly known fact that students who can relate to their teachers, subjects, or even the content that is being taught in the classroom, those students will succeed better than the students who do not care, or are not interested. When teachers are able to get those students to care, be interested, and put in the extra effort, chances are they are practicing Personally Meaningful Education. Graduation Speech : Education And Education

- As much as we may like to seem that we have all the answers, the truth of the matter is that there are some disconnects within education. When schools began they were designed to serve the community they were in. Though they do serve the community in a broad context. I believe they begun to serve their own agenda, like sending all students to college. Nothing is wrong with college, and of course every student should be given the opportunity to pursue higher education. However, the reality is that there are jobs, careers and needs of the world that don’t require a full college education....   [tags: Education, High school, College, School]

Graduation Speech : Education And Education

- In education environments today, the only factor that students and teachers believe in are grades. Throughout elementary and intermediate years, the ability to learn and build off that knowledge was the main priority. However, once a student gets into his or her middle school and high school years, the main priority becomes academic grades. The reason for the change in priority is due to requirements colleges expect of their enrollees. Teachers begin to explain the importance of academic grades rather than the importance of gaining knowledge; not just for a test but to gain knowledge and build off of it....   [tags: High school, Education, Grade, Teacher]

Graduation Speech: What is Education?

- My goal tonight is to motivate you and to encourage others to get their diploma. I'll start with a quote: Education is what you have left over after you have forgotten everything you have learned. Let me repeat that. Education is what you have left over after you have forgotten everything you have learned. I think that quote applies to me because I had to forget what I was taught growing up. And, what I was left with is my diploma and education, but more so, wisdom. I'm up here tonight because some people in this community opened up their ears, hearts, and homes to me....   [tags: Graduation Speech, Commencement Address]

Graduation Speech On Higher Education

- In today’s world, most good paying jobs require a college degree, which means the debate about higher education is no longer about higher education and its importance, or even the purpose of higher education. Social norms closed those debates by making a college degree a minimum requirement for landing a well-paying job. If individuals want a good life they have to get a good job and to get that job they need to have a college degree. Therefore, now the debate on higher education is whether or not general education courses should be required....   [tags: Higher education, Education, Academic degree]
