Eden Prairie High School is one of the largest high schools in Minnesota. Three floors of classrooms and resource centers all surrounding our commons, which fed over 3,000 people a day. The hallways were lined with cherry red lockers and black and white walls corresponding with our school colors. Great amounts of school spirit expressed by students, faculty, and even alumni flowed through the hallways daily. Every classroom was equipped with a Smart Board which functioned as an interactive black board powered by the teacher’s computer. Tripling the amount of students, floors and classrooms from my previous school was a tremendously intimidating concept for my 13-year-old self. I overcame my worries of attending such a large school and excelled academically my freshman year. My grade point average boosted my confidence enough to take more difficult courses. ...teach me in a way that no other teacher has before. She made me realize that other opinions matter, which ultimately opened my mind to the world of learning. Through a period of only four months she transformed my attitude towards learning. I began to look at learning not as a requirement but a privilege. A privilege that will eventually provide me with acceptance into a college, provide me with a job, and present me with the opportunity to share my knowledge with others.
Without Ms. Willey and my father, I would not be where I am today. The encouragement and guidance provided by these two wonderful people helped me realize the importance of learning. They made it possible for me to conquer extraordinary goals that one day seemed unreachable. I was able to boost my grade point average enough to complete my ultimate goal, acceptance into my dream college, St. Thomas.
