On May 17th, 2014, I walked across the stage at SUNY College at Buffalo a proud graduate earning a bachelor’s degree. With my background as a Jamaican born young woman from a single parent home, that day would see unimaginable for some people. However, with much dedication, and overcoming insurmountable obstacles that day became a reality for both myself and my family. My accomplishments during my undergraduate study has prepared me for the challenges of graduate school. Accomplishments such as excelling course studies, awards for excellent research and writing, on campus publications of historical research papers and volunteer work. Strengths developed during my involvement at the refugee center include the ability to adapt to both difficult and changing environments. The course load that I took on as an undergraduate makes me suitable for graduate school. The course load as a criminal justice major is similar to the social work curriculum. Many of the courses that I enrolled in as an undergraduate included social service impact on the community, especially those less sufficient communities. Reforms in both private and public sectors that will be beneficial to those who are in need. My goal is to find different ways to enhance the well-being of people within the society, specifically those who are financially disadvantaged. To find solutions to improve the quality of life for people who may live a life that is socially well. One specific way is to look into reforming the criminal justice system, which throughout history has played a significant role in destroying communities. The criminal justice has had major ramifications in destroying some communities. As a career goal, I would want to be instrumental in reforming this system, thus leading to safer and more advanced society. I realized growing up in school and church that I am a natural helper, I always try my best to help those in need. One specific thing I did growing up and in college was to volunteer my time to local soup kitchen to feed the hungry. This essay aims to explore the characteristics that make a good quality social work assessment in child care. Martin (2010) stated that there was “no single agreed definition of social work assessment.” Coulshed and Orme (2006, p24) did not offer a formal definition but they described assessment as “…a basis for planning what needs to be done to maintain, improve or bring about change in the person, the environment or both.” According to the Maclean and Harrison (2015) good assessments must be “purposeful and timely.” This is because practitioners need to be clear about why they are carrying out assessments and what it is they wish to achieve at the end of that assessment.
I am the product of divorced parents, poverty stricken environments, and a blended family, but I refuse to let that dictate the outcome of my life. At the age of ten, I had to assume the role of a fatherly figure to my three siblings, so I missed out on the typical childhood most would have had. I grew up in neighborhoods where gangs and criminal acts of violence were a pervasive occurrence, but I resiliently did not allow the peer pressures of others to force me to conform to their way of life. By the age of 15, I received my worker 's permit, and that allowed me the ability to help my mother financially in the absence of my father’s income. I worked the maximum amount of hours I could while balancing my academics and extracurricular school activities. I was a scholar athlete and triathlete in high school, and although I continuously faced much adversity, I still managed to be accepted to the University of California State, Bakersfield after I graduated from high school in 2005. I knew I loved to help others but it was not until I was an emerging adult that I knew what my calling was. There are many different career fields you can go into as a social worker: from mental health, drug and alcohol abuse all the way to child welfare. My strengths definitely stem from my passion about helping others and social work. Becoming a mother and overcoming tough challenges is also a strength of mines. My passion to become a social worker began when I was pursuing an undergraduate degree. I had the opportunity to spend my service learning hours with an amazing young lady by the name of Paige. Paige is 25 years old and has a twin brother and a younger brother who she recently lost to suicide. She came into this world prematurely, 3 months before her due date and weighed 1 pound 12 ounces. From birth Paige had complications she almost lost her life and required open heart surgery at 3 days old. Throughout her life she has needed 19 surgeries on her legs, back and arms. Paige has Cerebral Palsy.
Research is a necessity when it comes to providing services. Social Workers need it to be able to determine their clients ' needs, to see what resources/services they have access to and if their client doesn 't have much access where can they get it. Research is also used to see how effective an intervention is and whether it would be a right fit for their clients. It provides social service agents with ways to identify problems within their clients, communities, organizations, and the government. Also it helps them to create ways to aid in effective change. This approach has much future promise particularly in the context of economic challenges and resource constraints. Since the African continent has problems with lack of resources it is wise that countries adopt this approach and move away from the remedial one which is costly. The developmental approach is highly friendly with social work’s historical values and commitment to achieving social justice and human rights (Midgley & Conley, 2010). However, there are limitations facing the developmental approach in social work.
The social work profession is defined as “a practice-based profession and an academic discipline that promotes social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people (ISFW, ‘Global Definition of Social Work’, 2016).” The definition may be true about the profession but it is more in depth than just that.
