Graduation Maya Angelou’s autobiographical essay “Graduation” was more than graduation. Upon reading the story I realized that Maya highlights that the African-American families at the time regarded the eighth grade graduation to be a big event. Initially Maya was excited and hopeful about the event, yet when she took her seat in the auditorium, she felt anxious. Mr. Edward Donleavy, a white speaker delivered the commencement speech in which made Maya upset because told them that black people only achieve success through sports, not through academics. “The man’s dead words fell like bricks around the auditorium and too many settled in my belly” (21). Maya did not allow the reality of the world she lived in stop her from realizing her dream. I never allowed hardship to define who I am. I was able to overcome difficulties even when I was on the brink of giving up. I was always told myself that either I can whine about the difficulties and the injustice I faced in my life or I can move on and find solution for the challenges I experience. I experienced many different obstacles in my life and I was fortunate enough to overcome those obstacles. When I first came to America, everyone in my family was in a culture shocked. We lived our entire lives with people who look, dress, and speak the same language as us. It was hard for us to settle down because we did not speak English, and we also didn’t understand the culture. When I started school, everything was good because the teachers were very welcoming and were helping me to adjust to the new school, but after a few weeks, school became a nightmare for …show more content…

I was able to talk to teachers from my school and other school to see if they can give us few hour of their time once in a week to help us with the after school program. After few weeks, I was pleased to learn that some of my teachers were more than happy to help me with the program. After the teachers got involved were able to get financial support from bossiness and members from the community so we can buy the equipment needed to make the program more productive than it was
