Every teacher begins the year with a fresh set of faces and new expectations, but what many don’t realize is that along with the new expectations are a new set of hurdles. Every child is different. Yes, some have blue eyes and some have brown, but those differences are superficial. A caring educator looks at each child and assesses what they will need. Some go hungry and need food; others have learning disabilities such as A.D.D. and require extra attention. Some students simply don’t find Dickenson as exciting as other activities such as: personal nutrition, how to fix a leaky pipe, how to make a car start, what angle and lens will capture the light perfectly, or how to cook dinner. Many believe that once we began cutting elective class such as Nutrition, Auto Shop, Wood Working, Photography, Ceramics, Home Economics, and the countless other non-academic classes we closed the door on options for many students. Without the option to explore elective classes we are limiting those students who want to become tradesmen, who don’t plan on going to college, who need to work immediately after graduating high school, and are not providing an opportunity for the student who needs a creative break from academic classes.
According to a study published by Forbes almost 75% of graduating high school seniors in California will not continue on to college despite taking preparatory college classes (Brown, 2012). What will these students do? With a lack of formal training in any area of craftsmanship many will work part time jobs. The same is true for many high school graduates across the country. However, many don’t see this as a problem. A recent article, “Cutting Classes,” published by Teacher Magazine explains one administrator’s view on ...

...nd old Home-Economics classrooms that have been dismantled and converted into Technology Labs. Forgotten classrooms and forgotten skills that are being pushed out to make room for the changing times. The power to choose their academic path is no longer in the hands of each individual child but determined by money and government. Unfortunately, their choices don’t seem to be setting every child up for success. Each student possess their own set of hurdles and their own set of talents. It is the school’s job to allow each student to blossom into their full potential and prepare them for the world outside of the High School’s doors. Elective classes allow students a break from academic classes, they prepare them from a career as a tradesman, and give those students not going to college the means to provide for themselves. It’s time to bring the choice back to students.

Graduation Speech : A Speech

- Graduation is not as glamorous as everyone thinks. Sitting in the bleachers for four hours in the scalding heat with your nicest clothes on is not fun (at least for me). I would’ve had no problem skipping my graduation, except for one part. There is one segment of graduation that makes the whole thing bearable, the speech. The graduation speech plays a pivotal role in making or breaking graduation ceremony. These speeches not only serve to inspire the public, but also shapes the values of the academic community....   [tags: Commencement speech, Graduation, Want]

College or University Graduation Speech

- Hello, good morning and welcome to graduation for the class of 2012. I have waited to hear those words for 5 years - and by the looks on all of my fellow graduates faces, I am not alone. Think with me for a minute about the process we have gone through which has gathered us here today. Our stories of these past years are not much different. Whether you went to a community college, transferred here from another four-year school or started your freshman year in the dorms near the entrance of this campus, we are finally finishing together....   [tags: Graduation Speech, Commencement Address]

- As I look out on this crowd tonight, I see a diversity of people. I see grandparents who have raised their families, lived through many crises and have accomplished many goals. I see mothers and fathers who have fulfilled some of their dreams, but still may be struggling with challenges and goals to meet. Some families are here tonight to watch their oldest child graduate. For other parents, they’re here to celebrate with their youngest child. Yet all parents wish the best for their children and hope to see them succeed in their endeavors....   [tags: Graduation Speech, Commencement Address]

Graduation Speech

- Someone very special in my life once told me, "Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off of your goals." Upon entering high school four years ago, the majority of us had one goal and only one goal in mind, graduation. Many of us have heard people say that high school is the best time of our lives, so we better enjoy it. With that in mind, we thought that the next four years were going to be a breeze and before we knew it we would be out of here. Well, that is when reality hit us ......   [tags: Graduation Speech, Commencement Address]

- Good evening and welcome to the commencement ceremonies of the class of 2006. It has been a long journey, somewhere around 18 years, but we've finally reached the piece de resistance of our high school years. I'm not very good at this sentimental thing, so I scratched up a little poem. Ladies and Gentleman, may I present to you, "Ode to the Class of '06." ODE TO THE CLASS OF 2012 'Twas the night of graduation, and under the steeple there were very, very emotional people. Thoughts of the future, thoughts of the past, memories which will always last....   [tags: Graduation Speech, Commencement Address]

- Good evening everyone. My name is Toyota Moko, and I am an international student from Japan. As the first-ever international student speaker on commencement, I am very honored to be here tonight to be given this opportunity to speak on behalf of the graduating class of the 2003. Born and grew up in Tokyo where speaking English was absolutely absent in my eighteen years of life, one day the life-changing experience came to me. When I was fifteen-years-old, the summer of 1998, I came to America for the very first time for the home stay program through my high school....   [tags: Graduation Speech, Commencement Address]

- Good evening. A couple weeks ago, I was attempting to clean my room when I unearthed an old yearbook from my days in middle school. Rather absentmindedly I opened the book to browse through it. However, before long I became immersed in the memories brought back to life and quickly lost track of time. Over an hour later, I set the book aside and marveled at how much had changed since then. Not only had people changed physically, but they had also changed their friends, habits and behaviors. Furthermore, we have all grown as a result of the changing world around us, a changing world that has witnessed the tragedy of Sept....   [tags: Graduation Speech, Commencement Address]

- Isn't it strange how princes and kings And clowns who caper in sawdust rings And common folk, like you and me Are builders for eternity. For each is given a bag of tools, A shapeless mass, and a set of rules. And each of us, a life is flown, Must either build a stumbling block or stepping stone.
