Born to a seven member family in Kingston, Jamaica, the last child of six, December 30, 1975 is a day my mother will cherish for the rest of her life. Given the name Tena Elizabeth Mitchell, affectionately called Mellissa, I grew up in a humble family with limited resources. Living constantly in the shadow of my older siblings, I was always compared with my siblings, a comparison I did not appreciate. I took my Common Entrance, a test taken in Jamaica to place adolescents in a High School that suits their academic abilities; now known as Grade Six Achievement Testing (GSAT) and was placed in what was considered one of the top five high schools by the Jamaican society. However, the beginning of High School, September 1988, was the changing point of my so humble life and the beginning of a period of change, self-recognition and acceptance.
Hurricane Gilbert ravished Jamaica on the morning of September 12, 1988; this was the day I was to begin High School. I officially entered High School on September 26, 1988, where I was introduced to a new set of adolescents, mode of socialization, and environment. While in Primary school, I was always described as a silent, shy child who only spoke when she chooses to and with whom she chose to speak. I never changed this practice when I entered High School, I continued to be anti-social and reserved in my communications with others. This behavior led teachers who knew my eldest sister, as she attended that same school, to start making constant comparison to that of my sister. I started to become rebellious and defiant, as a result of the constant comparison, as I was determined to maintain my own identity. parents ability to be strict on me as an adolescent, was what pushed me to be even more
goal focused and driven. Due to their constant reminder of our socio-economic
background and how they worked relentlessly to change that in order to bring us into a
higher socio-economic way of life, that made me equally driven to ensure that I never
failed in any of my academic pursuits.
My first year of High School was very different, but also very rewarding and I would
not want to change one second of it. I met new people, I saw other perceptions on situations and how girls viewed their bodies. I recognized that I was totally different from my peers, as they were more for fun while I was so much more focused. I was living with many boundaries set by my parents and my own self-set boundaries, while others were just carefree in how they approached their life.
