Got Equality?

Throughout the development of the United States, racism has existed. The growing problem of racism increases with every day that passes. People everyday continue to discriminate toward races other than their own. This problem needs to be fixed, and without knowledge, our country will continue to wage war against itself.

Racism refers to an act of discrimination or prejudices where people deem members of one race intrinsically superior to that of another race (“Define”). Racism has always existed. From the beginning of time, to the present, it has exist. It will continue to exist, due too the stereotypes, and prejudices people have. People, in general, naturally have hates or dislikes for other races. Many reasons for prejudices such as these, are often attributed to upbringings, neighborhoods, and childhood teachings.

An example of racism, discrimination, and extreme cruelty. In June of 1998,occurred when three white males jumped a black hitchhiker by the name of James Byrd. The beat him until he was unable to move, tied his ankles to their truck bumper, and drug him until his body disassembled (Williams 18). Acts like these can cause stereotypes, and prejudices to occur. In this case these men went to the extreme, by beating this man and brutally killing him. This fiendish murder disgusted many Americans. To many, it brought back terrible memories of the South before the 1960's civil rights movement (Williams 18).

In the 1960's, racism became known as a set of beliefs which established cultural norms and the social hierarchy. (“Environmental”). Many psychologists and psychiatrists call racism a science. The first tenet of racism involves the knowledge that, all people hold negative views of ...
