Date and Location of Composition:
Many scholars suggest that the Gospel of Matthew was written in the latter half of the first century, dating between “80-85 CE.” Matthew was written as a “direct response to the situation created by the aftermath of the Jewish Revolt of …66-70[CE]” and to address the frequent issue of Pharisaic Judaism, attempting to show its dominance. This allows many scholars to conclude that this Gospel was written after Mark, because Matthew stresses the destruction of the temple in 70_BCE. The Jews of that time lived under a pagan king, enduring brutal treatment, suppression of their religious traditions, and heavy taxation by the Roman Empire. Roman occupation in Palestine and Syria continuously controlled the Jewish people. Romans prosecuted many Christian Jews and Christian Gentiles during that time for their faith.

The same way Balaam failed to collaborate with the king’s plan, by uttering blessing instead of curses, the Magi fail to help Herod in his conspiracy to kill Jesus, by paying homage to Jesus and returning home without reporting the location of baby Jesus to Herod. Balaam forecasted “a star coming to worship the newborn king.” Thus the magi stood as a “successor to Balaam’s” prophecy because a star appeared and led them to the location where Jesus was. The Magi pay homage to the King that Balaam foretold long ago.
