Recommended: Essay on the purpose of the gospel of mark

The Gospel of Mark teaches about the person and Acts of God as revealed in the words and works of his Son, Jesus Christ. His record draws upon powerful stories and narratives to portray the power and love that he believes Jesus brought to the people. Through this form of writing, Mark produced a work that is not only very engaging, but also leaves the reader with vivid images and examples of how the work and words of Jesus directly affected those who believed in his teachings.
In chapter one, the scene of the baptism unfolds as John the Baptist prepares the way. This is a very important scene because it displays John’s power by having him perform the baptisms, which would mean that he is in some way held in high respect and in proximity with God. But at the same him, John is humble and as God's promised messenger, his mission is to "prepare the way for the Lord" (Mark 1:2-3). He does this by informing the people that one more powerful than himself is coming (Mark 1:7) and that he, John, was but a servant of Christ, and that Christ was his Lord. This is a very vivid scene that is described in detail, from what John is eating and wearing, to specific dialogue. It’s very easy to picture this scene, especially when Jesus himself is baptized in the Jordan by John. This scene evokes many different emotions and symbolizes a very humbled attitude that would be a relevant message today. Although John is delegated great power as a religious leader, he remains modest in the face of the greater power that exists. He fulfills his mission with dignity and respect, thus setting a strong example for those who look up to him.

... are drawn together by the tightest bond imaginable, that of family. Jesus re-defines family in a way that has nothing to do with ties of blood, but with the ties to the love of God. This is a message that is very relevant in any time and age as people find belonging in new faiths, thus finding new community and family. It is often the togetherness and shared religious convictions that bring people close on a personal level and establish a bond similar to family ties.
All in all, there are many powerful stories and images portrayed in the Gospel of Mark in order to preach the word of God. In order to establish strong faith bonds, these texts draw upon powerful stories and narratives that connect to readers. Not only do the stories portray the power and love of Jesus, but they teach important lessons that are relevant through time and across religious convictions.
