Goodwill is a not-for-profit organization, continually recognized by Forbes magazine for being one of America's 25 most inspiring companies by consumers.This is no surprise since Goodwill has been serving communities and changing lives since it was founded in 1902 by Rev. Edgar Helms. The Goodwill Industries was formally know as the Morgan Memorial which begun as an outreach program in the south side of Boston Massachusetts. The outreach program was created when Rev. Edgar Helms was appalled by the conditions immigrants faced during the great depression. Rev. Edgar Helms and his church members collected clothing and household goods from wealthier citizens of Boston to give to the poor throughout the community. What began as a charity mission turned into a program to hire the needy and train them to refurbish donated goods.Goodwill today continues to do his work and has employed more than 216,000 people in the United States, Canada and the involvement in 14 countries that include Finland, the philippines, and Venezuela. Donating various goods and services can eventually aid the homeless with getting their lives back on
Most people feel that they should help the needy in some way or another. The problem is how to help them. This problem generally arises when there is a person sitting on the side of the road in battered clothes with a cardboard sign asking for some form of help, almost always in the form of money. Yet something makes the giver uneasy. What will they do with this money? Do they need this money? Will it really help them? The truth of the matter is, it won't. However, there are things that can be done to help the needy. Giving money to a reliable foundation will help the helpless, something that transferring money from a pocket to a man's tin can will never do.
We are privileged to have our own Ronald McDonald House here in Omaha, located at 620 South 38th Avenue in the downtown area. In 2013, the Omaha Ronald McDonald House recycled around 35 million pop tabs donated by local schools, businesses, organizations, and families. Additionally, the chapter holds various fundraisers throughout the year, open to public participation. Some of this year’s upcoming events are the Omaha Golf Classic at Shadow Ridge Country Club, the Kids and Clays Shooting Sports Tournament in Brainard, Nebraska, the vinNebraska Wine Event, and the Wings and Wheels Auto and Air Show. The Salvation Army is a Christian church and international charitable organization. The Salvation Army was founded in 1865, in the East End of London, by William Booth (Salvation, n.d). Booth was an evangelist who wanted to offer practical help to the poor and as well as preaching the Gospel to them. However, it originally was called the Christian Mission, but Booth had changed its name to the Salvation Army in 1878 (TheSalvation, n.d). In addition, “Is a protestant denomination of the Christian Church with over 1.6 million members in 109 countries” (BBC, n.d). The Salvation Army is “famous for its work with people who have fallen on hard times: it offers help to the elderly, the young, offenders, drug addicts and blind and disabled people;
The charitable wing of the Humana organization was founded to “support charitable organizations and institutions that promote education, health and human services, community development and the arts.” While the group believes that these endeavors are indeed noble, Humana can not make up for a poor ethical foundation by throwing money at the problem.
As an intern at Goodwill Industries, I am a part of the resource center as a resource service assistant. I have several task right now until the second week of March. The position that I hold now ties into the other areas at Goodwill. I help clients with their computer skills. Many times people have come into the resource center and are experiencing being on the computer for the first time, some have taken the basic computer class at Goodwill, yet are not comfortable making a cover letter or resume. I help them in these areas. I also help them with email set up and sometimes I am there to listen to them tell their stories.
Volunteering has a huge impact not only on Habitat for Humanity, but the whole world. Habitat for humanity is a non-profit Christian organization that helps people all over the world, not just in the United States. Habitat for Humanity has helped over 100 countries. I have been involved in a charity organization called “Hasala”; which means “piggy bank. This organization has a wide range of activities is in one of the Delta region governorates. As a team member, I had several duties. We organized fundraising activities and provided food supplies and clothing for needy families. We also conducted social research and created a database on families with debts enabling the organization to help pay these debts.
The non-charitable organisations objective embedded within its mission statement is to work with all its partners towards the attainment of the sustainable human development goals adopted by the world community and the realisation of the vision of peace and social progress enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations. UNICEF was created with the purpose of working with others to overcome the obstacles that poverty, violence, disease and discrimination place in a child’s path, thus advancing the cause of humanity.

“Charity sees the need, not the cause.” (German Proverb) Many people may question “What is charity?” According to Webster’s dictionary, Charity is defined as the benevolent goodwill toward or love of humanity. Charity to me is significant because it gives you a feeling of inner satisfaction while helping out your community as well. If you have the capability, then you should be able to share it with those less fortunate. The community we live in has a huge influence on us personally – it fosters safety, responsibility and sustainability – so it is important that we take our community seriously for the greater good of humanity and for our own personal benefit.
