In the Bible, it is mentioned that humans are made “in His image”. What exactly is an image? Dictionary.com defines an image as “a physical likeness or representation of a person, animal, or thing, photographed, painted, sculptured, or otherwise made visible”. Something that sticks out in this definition is the word “physical”. God’s presence and immanence in His creation are real. He did not create mankind and then decided to leave us. He cares for us. God made His creation in the likeness of Him! Genesis 1:27 says “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them”. It’s important to see that God did not create His other creations in His own image. God has favor in mankind. …show more content…
God gave man dominion over the animals. When God saw His creation, animals, he saw that it was good. However, when he saw Mankind, He saw that it was very good. Erickson says that “The image of God distinguishes humans from all other creatures; it is what makes us human” (p. 172). God made us in His image which gives us value. For example, when a cat gets run over by a car and dies, it is sad. But, when a person gets run over by a car, it is a tragedy. Why does human life have more value than animal life? God gave us value! God also gave us the ability to use logic and reason. Has an ape ever built a car? Has a leopard ever played chess? Of course not! God gave humans reason, not animals. We are dominant over the animals. Jesus displayed a love for humans throughout the new testament. It says in Mathew 9:35-36, “Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion …show more content…
A big debate going on in our society today is whether or not abortion is considered murder. It is not simply a matter of opinion. Because all humans were made in the image of God, all human life has value. This includes life that has not technically been born yet. Something that angers me is that many in our society today will fight for the rights of homosexuals and women, for example, but are fine with babies being murdered. Not to sound closed-minded but, it seems to me that we need to get our priorities straight. Congress passes a law for gay-marriage yet unborn babies are killed everyday! These unborn babies have value no matter what other people say. If doctors have to literally mutilate a baby inside of a pregnant woman to kill it, then whatever is inside her is clearly alive! You cannot kill what is already dead. I’m sure that God’s heart breaks for these innocent babies being killed. Something people need to realize in today’s society is that we all have value. God made us to be like Him! I see far too many people with Nihilistic views. God gives us meaning. He gives life meaning. Therefore, abortion is
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth (Genesis1:1.) God’s perfect wisdom created everything. In Genesis 1 and 2 we can see that God has loving and gentile nature when He created the earth and heavens. God created man in his image and we are the only creation that God breathed in the breath of life for human beings (Genesis 2:7). God did not do this for any of other creations but only for humans. The Bible has many scriptures that tell us how creative God is. Genesis 1;26 states “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” God created all of this for us to have fellowship with him.
Thou shalt not kill; one-tenth of what may arguably be the most famous guidelines of morality in the western culture, and also the main driving force for pro-life advocates. The argument supporting their beliefs typically starts with the premises that a fetus is a person, and to destroy or to kill a person is unethical. Therefore abortion, the premeditated destruction of a human being, is murder, and consequently unethical. I deny the fact that the fetus, what I will refer to as an embryo up to 22 weeks old, has the right to live. The opposing argument is invalid because a fetus, although perhaps a part of human species, is not formally a person. This leaves it simply to be a part of the woman?s body, whose fate lies solely in the hands of the pregnant woman alone, no different from a tumor she might have. By proving this, the abortion debate then becomes an issue of women?s rights, something that is most controversial indeed. Furthermore, it is fair to question the credibility of many people against abortion because of obvious contradictions in the logic of their belief systems. The fact that this debate is relevant in modern society is ludicrous since there is a simple and plausible solution to this problem that could potentially end the debate for good, leaving both sides satisfied.
Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them
"So god created man in his own image, in the image of god he created
In America abortion is one of the most heavily debated topics in recent years. Pro-life or pro-choice? Many people believe it is immoral and even consider abortion to be murder. The definition of abortion states “The termination of pregnancy by the removal or expulsion from the uterus of a fetus or embryo prior to being capable of normal growth” Did you know that 1 in 3 women in the U.S. will have an abortion in their lifetime? (Baker, Aspen. "A Better Way to Talk about Abortion." Aspen Baker:. N.p., n.d. Web. 25 Aug. 2016.) When first researching this topic I wondered, “What’s the big deal? Why would it matter if someone who was never even born, died?” And I realized that babies that would have been born due to abortion,
Since the Darwinian Revolution of the 19th century our society has turned upside down. Everything under the sun had become questionable, the origin of life, how we came to be, where are we headed and what to do in the here all became questions in life. But one of the greatest impacts of this new age thinking is its effect on our Old World values. Western societies values, morals and ethics became debatable, with some people striving for change and others clinging for stability. Battle lines had been drawn and the Liberals and Conservatives were ready to duke it out on a number of issues. One of these debates centers on a woman?s right to have and abortion. According to the Webster?s dictionary and abortion is defined as a miscarry, something misshapen or unnatural. An abortion is a procedure in which an embryo or fetus is prohibited from developing by artificial means. One could argue that this is next to murder. How can we as a society sanction the murdering of developing babies? Also it can equally be stated that abortion is unnatural and a health hazard to women who have undergone the procedure. Whatever the case, abortion should be outlawed because it is immoral and mothers should face the responsibilities of their actions. Many arguments can be used in order to put an end to abortion or at least in order to establish dialogue. One of the oldest arguments against abortion is the religious standpoint. Western society (Canada & U.S.A.) is historically a Judeo-Christian culture with Judeo-Christian values. Although in recent times we have become an increasingly pluristic society the Old World thinking is still at the heart of our social relations and laws. The Bible says ?Thou shalt not kill? thus prohibiting people from harming others or themselves. Abortion and its advocates violate this law. They seek to change one of the most fundamental values of our society. Pro-choice under this stance is equated with murder and ?playing God?. One may raise the question, how can a minority inflict its views of the majority? According to Francis X. Meenan, this is a false assumption. He goes on to claim that those who favor abortion on demand are the real minority (Bender & Leone, 97). He also claims that the issue of abortion is a moral debate and cannot be settled by numbers. So even if pro-choice advocates outnumbered pro-life advocates, this would prove or...
of the Bible, Genesis, we are told we are 'made in the image of God'
What gives us the right to decide who should live and who should die? That is God's decision. The fetus, the innocent human life whose only protection in the world is its mother's womb can no longer feel protected because even its very own mother could have it murdered. Yet that baby did nothing to deserve to have its life snatched away so suddenly. How can a tiny baby who can feel, breathe, and move be condemned to die without ever saying or doing anything wrong? In our constitution, we are all given the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Why is it that a baby is not given these rights as well?
Understanding what it is for man to be made in the image of God is essential to understanding the role a pastor is to fill. The Image of God refers to
...ed a part to him. First we see God as omnipotent then we see God asking where Adam and Eve are hiding (Not being omnipotent). With the creation of mankind God loses some part of his Godliness and he gains some humanity. God has a little human in himself and we have a little God in us. But the main point still is the same, God is the authority over man and will remain this way. I also feel that the God in the bible is truly no different than the Gods of Greece for example. The God of ancient Greece acted just like humans, the only difference was that they were immortal. The God of the bible seems to act just like humans, shows love, anger, regret, learns from mistakes and so forth. So in the end God shows flaws and learns from mistakes. God is like humans, maybe this is why we don?t understand God sometimes because we can?t understand other people and their actions.
God marvelously and miraculously created man and animals for a purpose. God blessed them by saying, be fruitful, and multiply” (Genesis 1:22 [KJV]). Part of Scripture is God-breath and useful, exposing our rebellion, our correction, mistakes, training us to live God’s way. Through God’s Word we are put together, shaped and equipped for the job God has for us (2nd Timothy 3:16-17 [MSG]). God has always been involved with His creation from the beginning of time. Long before God laid down earth’s foundations, He had humanity in His mine, had decided on us as the focal point of His Love, to be made perfect and Holy by His Love (Ephesians 1:4-5 [MSG]). It was nothing but tot...
In all of God’s glorious creation, there may be nothing more mystifying than mankind itself. Genesis 1:27 is clear when it states, “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” According to Scripture, God saw man’s creation, and all creation for that matter, as good. John Frame quotes John Murray on the matter when he writes, [Genesis 1:26-31] emphasizes the uniqueness of man in many ways…The terms “let us make” indicate that there is unique engagement of divine thought and counsel, and bespeak the fact that something correspondingly unique is about to take place.” Therefore, a clear distinction is already being made between mankind and the rest of creation, a distinction that carries with it an intrinsic significance that deems mankind as special and patterned after God himself. However in Genesis 3, a drastic turn of events wreaked havoc upon God’s original design and intent as man, out of a desire “to be like God,”
One may ask what exactly does it mean to be made in God’s image. For someone not familiar with the Christian religion may find this as confusing. Living in God’s image does not exactly mean living as if you are God, which would blasphemy, but instead use our attributes that God has given us that are similar to His own. Christians are aware that God’s image is holy, merciful, benevolent, just, independent, and also rational since he has the ability to reason. Thus since humans were created in God’s image, we all encompass these characteristics.
So to begin, we understand that our God is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent. There are so many scriptures that display these attributes in his word. When we talk about the Trinity we mean Tri-union or Triune, which means threeness in oneness. Before we describe this we must understand how man’s relationship to God and how the doctrine of the Trinity effects how we as humans look upon our selves. However since the fall of man we have lost our contact to God due to us hiding our eyes from the righteousness of the Lord. So let’s look at before the fall when God created man in Genesis1:26, God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.” The question must be asked, what does it mean to be made in the image of God? Many in the past say it is either God talking to his angelic court, or even that we as humans are made in the image of angels. This argument is not very convincing because when it describes creation angels are not even mentioned until Genesis 3, when we are first introduced to Satan. Also note that in the Hebrew there it is the word (elō-him) or God designating...
The term “image” can be described as something in the very nature of humans, in the way they were made (Etzel & Gutierrez, 2012). Therefore, we are created in the Image of God so that we are more like him even with the fall of man. Even though the full term “Image of God” is not specified there is enough evidence or detail to put the pieces together as God created man in his own image, therefore we are a reflection of Christ himself. God says, “Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment (John 7:2)”. No one has authority except for Christ to judge others for their wrongs and mistakes. There came a point in time where even though I knew Christ and was saved, I tried to judge others by their appearance instead of their personality. I was working at a call center and during my training, I learned that the man training me was a very godly man, always reading his bible in between calls and praying several times throughout the day. All the while, there was a woman sitting across from us that just looked weird. I said to myself “ I don’t like her” but littl...
