Keeping blood glucose levels under control is crucial for diabetics and those who are insulin dependent will often times be required to test their levels four times per day. As of yet there is not a cure for diabetes, however, with modern technology monitoring diabetes is as simple as turning on a computer. Traditional methods for testing include using a lancet to draw blood from your finger, applying the blood to a strip for testing and inserting the strip into a meter that will determine the blood glucose level. These hand held meters are available in a variety of styles ranging from a screen to display the result to one that will voice the results Hand held glucose meters require coding or calibration for each new set of testing strips. There are two ways to calibrate a hand held meter, either my manually entering the code into a meter or using a code chip. The code chip does make using a hand held simpler as there is not a need for manual coding with each new box of strips.
