Revolutionaries (opponents) negatively associate globalization as a way in which corporations impose western beliefs and customs, supplanting traditional and cultural practices of global communities, hence creating homogenization. “How to Judge Globalism” reflects the views of the opposition as a “continuation of Western imperialism” (Sen, 2002). Being a Dominican, I try to keep up with the news and learn the history of my nation. Historically, Western influence/ “globalization” negatively affected, not only the Dominicans of the island of Hispaniola, but also the Haitians. Western intervention in the island’s politics placed Rafael Leonidas Trujillo in power, whom later established a dictatorship. Trujillo placed a “platano curtain”, inhibiting external communication and information from entering or exiting the island and massacred innumerable Haitians due to his racial discrimination. The United States follows a pattern of intervention where the results have been analogous across the globe (ex. Augusto Pinochet in Chile, ISIS as a “military unit” for Syrian intervention, among others). Not to mention, as someone who considers globalization an ancient, yet incessantly reformed concept, the impact of globalization as conceptualized by war, a political and negative form of globalization. Wendell Berry discusses the party of the local economy and the party of the global economy. The global party most directly refers to the American corporations, which drain the resources of the smaller communities, including but not limited to rural American communities but also small communities across the borders. The global party has negatively affected the local economy, displacing small business, preventing local economic progress. On the other hand, these corporations have provided Americans with cheaper products, increasing the standard of American living. Due to global competition, the quality of products have also increased (and in certain cases, so have prices). Although, Americans have increasing competition for jobs against the large number of immigration flow to the United Sates, the United States has been able to benefit from talented individuals worldwide, diversifying the American workforce. Thus, creating a domino effect, pushing American individuals to strive for higher levels of education in order to compete against the foreign workers. Not only has immigration and professional competition motivated Americans to strengthen/develop their academic practices, but it has also aided the consolidation of the American economy.
