Growing up in a country where three foreign languages (French, Spanish, and English) have imposed on the majority; it was rough for a young child like me to find. Spain colonized Haiti in the 1500s, then the French came to take over the island and made it the best prosperous colony of the time. During the time, they imported slaves from Africa and brought them to the Caribbean under harsh and involuntary labor in the plantations. Fast forward to 1804, slaves upraised against their masters and declared independence in the following year. When French brought slaves with them, they had spoken a language, which was Creole. The majority has spoken this language since the country was born. But, because Spaniard the first colonizer spoke Spanish, Haitians till today have taught Spanish in schools. Similar practice goes for French, which considers the one of the country’s mothers tongue.
