The setting of the worldwide known novel The Giver by Lowry is a fictional world. There is no countries or states just the communities. There isn’t a specific culture per se but there is a code of conduct which characters in the book believe to be right but in the perspective of the reader the rules/laws which they abide by are controlling those in the community. The formation of the book is in chronological order until the main character Jonas meets the giver and he gives him memories, which therefore creates some flashbacks. The narration in The Giver is stylised in the third person creating a sense of overseeing the story being told. The intended audience based on the type of writing style should be for older teenagers and above. The impact which these elements have altogether create a book which shows the life of a boy, Jonas who lives in a society whereby he is given a position on one of the most important roles in there society. ...ure to The Giver as they both are interpreted as “fake” communities or towns. “The town was paper, but the memories were not.” That is how Jonas could have seen his world as the “dwelling” he was living in wasn’t with his biological family. His “family” didn’t know of the world he saw with the Giver and the memories Jonas experienced created him a whole new world which formed his life. Jonas’ coming of age is partly due to the importance of memories he receives from the Giver.
In summation, Jonas’ coming of age couldn’t have been aided with various topics. The importance of being an individual and how that shapes a person. The power that comes with freedom and responsibility that comes with that power. Lastly, memories hold key insight into the formation of the new Jonas at the end of the book. Lowry communicates in The Giver by showing a world not unlike our own.
